Here is something else fairly recent. Not seen it yet but looks interesting. BTW I think there should be an area in the resource section containing debates and talks, rather than having them scattered throughout various threads. At least that way whenever someone wants to post anything there will be some sort of uniform. Anyhow watch this for now.

Just listening to this Dan Dennett lecture and he just said something which takes me back. He mentions that when there are clergy in a meeting and one of them is a closeted atheist, he will say something like "you know I have an uncle who has the following issue...." Now that reminded me of myself. I did this for such a long time.

Myers is always fun. His blog is excellent. Wink

Anyway I like your idea of having a concentrated pool of these debate vids. We may have to do some re-organising.

Personally, I can't stand Dinesh D'Souza and his retelling of history; the 70million hindus apparently were systematically murdered by the invading jihadi's but simply 'disappeared'. No one ever addresses the millions which were enslaved under various Muslim empires, non-Muslims relegated to second class citizenship, the forced conversion of orphans (who were orphans because of Muslim policies).

To hear Dinesh D'Souza speak about religion is like hearing a combination of Resa Azlan and Karen Armstrong talk about Islam - apologetics conducted by people who don't have the balls to be honest.

Hey I like Reza Aslan  Wink

I do too Wink if he were single and at least bisexual, I'd date him in a second Cheesy

The problem is that he is a western education individual who refuses to accept that there are people in that part of the world are backwards socially and economically. He attempts to explain away rather than simply accepting that "yes, those people are backwards - they need to be bought kicking and screaming into the 21st century".

What Tommy Boy said. Who cares how they get to a more humane and progressive world view as long as they get there? Too many ignorant assholes in this world fucking shit up for me to care about the non-assholes having the correct thought processes about not being assholes.

Through the belief that it is humans who interpret and implement islam based on our knowledge that exists at any point in history. Does it make he wrong in his view? no. Does it mean that the rest of the world will change to his way of thinking? no.

Actually no, he does admit it. But he explains that their backwardness has more to do with other factors rather than Islam. I certainly agree that other factors are involved, but it def. doesn't mean they are dominating factors. They all play their own parts.

But the only countries that are remotely modern are those who are as far from orthodox Islam as one can get - to the point where in some countries Muslims drink alcohol quite openly with no view of it being a contradiction between their religion and how they live. With that being said, however, those countries who are more backwards are more likely to be more literalist in their interpretation of Islam?

And backwards being tribalistic behaviours etc rather than it being linked to wealth.

backwardness not necessarily being linked to wealth; case in point would be UAE and Saudi Arabia socially backwards even though they have wealth.

Yeah, that's a good point. I don't think wealth is linked with backwardness usually, but I do believe it can have links. Case in point, my home country Bangladesh, is relatively a poor country, but it's a secular country--although majority of the people there are Muslims. The constitution is secular. Only backwardness you find is in the southern villages, where people are really poor, and the tribalism is found there.

Which begs to question whether the solution is for the money to be spent on setting up education that not only teaches basic skills but progressive social values to the children but also to the people. I don't believe they're dumb, they want something else but have never been shown what that something else should be like. I'm sure when they see these honour killings there is a small voice in the back of their head going, "this doesn't seem right" but keeps quiet because "that is the way we've always done things around here".

So many lectures to watch lol. Christopher Hitchens is awesome, but for fucks sake can he stop debating Christians all the time? I mean, he ONLY debates Christians, I seen him debate a Jew once or twice, but NEVER a muslim, not even once. I'm not disrespectig Hitchens, but he should start debating different groups of people, not the same Christian hacks over and over again (D'Souza, Turek, etc).
