Im a bit at odds about this and you might hate me for I am going to say.

Let me begin by saying that I have no warm feelings at all for the Archbishop of Canterbury.  I personally think that he is a twat.  I can understand about how people feel about him living in this splendour, but the truth is that he did not build that palace himself out of the money he made.  It came with him acheiving the role of Archbishop because it was there long before him.  He is merely fulfilling a role.   Traditionally that role has been a very important role in English society.  It is only natural that a position like that will become political and require large buildings to emphasise its importance in society.  Same goes for the Pope and the Vatican.  They needed such things to keep their followers.  People are always going to be attracted by magnificent buildings.  Why do you think the Saudis are financing the construction of large mosques?  Public religion is always political in one way or another.

How relevent the roles of clergymen and religious figures are in today's world is another issue.

Wasn't that the point Pat Condell was making? Because religion is bullshit, it needed glamor and fireworks to convince their followers.

Yes that was one of them RIBS, I was more concerned with the way he seemed to be directing it all on the Archbishop and the Pope.  Don't get me wrong, I don't like both of them, particularly the Archbishop.  Had they built those palaces out of the money they made, I would have agreed with him.    But really they are fulfilling roles.  A simple dwelling would not have done that role credit unfortunately.  The way it would have not done the role of a monarch much credit.  Those people were representing something important to society, which was different back then.  Their buildings needed some grandeur in the end.

In a way those palaces are not their homes... They just reside there.

Yes Jack I know what you are trying to say.  Im not attempting to defend them either.  I don't like them myself.

It's often said that traditionally Islam doesn't have the concept of clergy. According to Bernard Lewis' the Ayotollahs are a departure from classical Islam. He even says that in this respect Islam is probably suffering from a disease inherited from Christianity.

But my question is aren't the so called 'scholars' and Imams or even the caliph in some ways the same as the clergy?

Good argument ras111, I thought of the point when watching the vdeo, but couldn't come up with a conclusion like you did. It'd serve as a good vid response, not that I like the Archbishops either, just to tell facts to Condell's fanboys.

How's the following video? Good or extreme?

"They claim moral authority when their track record shows that the words "religion" and "moral" don't even belong in the right sentence no more than the words "creation" and "science", or "Islam" and "education", or "biblical" and "sense".

    I absolutely love this guy.

I'm not a big fan of Pat's overly rehearsed, wooden style of video blogging, but I tend to agree with most of what he says. Recently though he's shown signs of becoming more alarmist and right-wing, and his fan base seems to consist mainly of Daily Mail readers (only for the videos critical of Islam and multiculturalism), which is a little worrying. This video was spot-on though.
