This guy is fairly funny but his stand up is far too political and clearly very one sided

If he was funny, might he not make the audience laugh to loudly which is definitely frowned upon.

Precisely my thoughts. Reminded me of when Homer Simpsons was trying to do comedy "Black people have names like Karl. White people have names like Lenny".

You have to remember that the peak of their hilarity is that guy called 'Baba Ali', who is probably one of the NOT funniest people I've ever come across - more than Azhar Usman.

    http://www.alistandup.com/
http://www.youtube.com/ummahfilms Baba Ali's hilariously preachy and self righteous videos.  guaranteed to have you rolling on the floor.

http://qa.sunnipath.com/issue_view.asp?HD=1&ID=2964&CATE=142 - lol fatwa.  because as lame as azhar usman is, there are some people who think that what he is doing is haraaaaaaaaaaaam.

    http://halalcomedy.blogspot.com/

http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29124&highlight=comedy - the usual alarmist hysterics. you have to love the kids over at sunniforum, who can post hundreds of messages disputing and debating the stupidest shit.  like this.  with such nuggets of wisdom as "And finally, on a slightly related topic: Brothers and sisters, please refrain from using sarcasm, i.e. blatant lying as a joke. What makes you so sure that it doesn't get written (by the Angels) as a lie?"

That baba ali geezer is not funny. All my family seem to love him which I find annoying. He reminded me of another guy who thinks he is really funny, goes under the name of "dawahworks" on youtube. He is just a total wanker and thinks that saying "i'm just saying" 25 times in his videos is the funniest thing ever.

One cannot mix humour with religion.  It just doesn't work.  True comedy attacks and makes fun of everything.  It is just like a 70 year old woman applying makeup.. window dressing.  Absolutely pathetic like the people who try to convince themselves that it is funny just because it is Islamic.

"Modern man's great illusion has been to convince himself that of all that has gone before he represents the zenith of human accomplishment, but can't summon the mental powers to read anything more demanding than emoticons. Fascinating. "

So there was this one Imam at my ol majid, he had a side business to make extra money. If you missed any prayers, he would do them for you, for a small donation...Boy, he had quite a rakat going.

Hay, why do Houris have black eyes? Because allah already broke them in for ya.

    Shwiiiing.. Oh, c'mon, what?

Is this thing on? Man, its so hot up here I feel like I have a coal under my foot.

So, I was watching a documentary on Malcolm X the other day, and apparently it took him a long time to build up the courage to do prayers the proper islamic way..... Cant blame him actually, I mean he was in Prison at the time..

    Whacha cha cha

So I heard there are a lot of latino converts lately. You can tell, sightings of allah's name in pieces of toast are up 500%.

At least Baba Ali is very moderate-these guys are salafi inspired.

Moderate how? I mean, compared to the comedian "Shaykh" Munajjid, yeah.  But not really.  Azhar Usman is a sufi, although it caused a lot of friction between people when he started going out on stage, as there is a segment of the sufis who think what he is doing is impermissible.  (Hence the lolfatwa from our friend Frizzy Rabbani at sunnipath).  IDK about Preacher Moss and the other guy who was with them.

Omid Djalili is not a Muslim.  He follows the Baha'i faith.

I wannabe Muslim comedian is Yusuf Estes.  He's an idiot, and not funny at all.

If you mean BabaAli from Ummah films on youtube then the ideas he gives out are very moderate-if you mean some other baba ali then sorry I have no idea who that is.

"I am ready to make my confession. I ask for no forgiveness father, for I have not sinned. I have only done what I needed to do to survive. I did not ask for the life that I was given, but it was given nonetheless-and with it, I did my best"

I don't find him moderate at all. I mean, perhaps moderate in the context of people like Yusuf Estes.  I'm not sure what "moderate" means in relation to Islam, particularly when it is a self-ascribed label being used by Muslims.   It sure as hell has never been defined clearly. Does believing in and promoting compulsory hijab count as moderate?  His latest video reads like an almost line by line reading of CAIR or MAS propaganda regarding anyone who dares criticize any aspect of Islam.  And I like the video about male / female friendships where he says that all guys want to get into all girls' pants, and that guys pretend to be girls' friends to do this. And then when the guy reveals his true, nefarious intentions (to sexxx the girl up, which is of course nefarious on planet Islam), "you brought this upon yourself." (his words, addressing WOMEN).  Blaming women for men's actions?  Is that what counts as moderate?  Possibly, when you're talking about religious Muslims.

Baba Ali criticizes aspects of Muslim sub-culture that are considered unpalatable in today's Ikhwani-influenced "mainstream Islam" in the United States, perhaps rightly so.  However, he does so from the self-created position of an outsider, claiming to be a convert to Islam (he is not), probably due to the fact that when converts criticize problematic cultural aspects of the Muslim sub-culture, it tends to have a shaming effect and drives people towards more stringent, "non-cultural" interpretations of Islam.   The interesting thing is that the aspects of the sub-culture that he criticizes are nothing more than the run of the mill complaints that second gens (which he belongs to) make about their parents' and grandparents' cultural practices and attitudes.

The rest of his stuff builds off of fundamentalist / evangelical American Christian arguments about science and creation, and I think we can agree that the people with that mentality aren't very moderate either.  (As an aside, I think it is interesting  how many American converts  and second gens are adapting and utilizing the apologetics of evangelical and fundamentalist Christians, even though the two stand directly at odds with one another).  I mean, I even sat down and watched like, 8 of his videos just now just to make sure I'm not being unfair to the guy and it was like I'm listening to Christian fundamentalists.

But the worst for me, more than his smarminess, his fake convert story, his preachiness, his wholehearted adoption of Ikhwani ideology is he fact that he's not original.  He was just the first one to put the second gen whinging on YouTube. Watching his video is just like a MYNA conference, lol.  He isn't saying anything every religious second gen Arab or Asian kid in the US hasn't said, especially about marriage traditions.  Everything I've seen in his videos so far has been said or written by myriad people before him.  That is just a criticism of him not related to being moderate or extreme or liberal.

I like 'ethnic' humour when its done really well. When its not done well its just lazy and predictable. But when it is done with panache and verve its great. The difference between cultures and ethnic minority experience can make for great comedy.

For example, great Jewish comedians, too numerous to mention. Black American standups like Chris Rock and going back, Richard Pryor. Those guys are not only hilarious, they touch on raw nerves, and communicate universal comedy through specific cultural humour. Comedians like Russell Peters, who is of Indian-Canadian origin do this kind of thing well too.

But there is something about these guys that isn't funny. I don't know what it is. The whole tone jars, the desperation to be funny set against the humorlessness that is at the base of their comedy. It just doesn't click.
