     OP - October 14, 2009, 07:17 PM

So I just signed up for Active Duty (I was in reserves), and I was told I'll be deployed in May to Iraq. This is my first deployment. Anyone here that was in the military and has been to Iraq, give me some 'back-stage' information of what to expect.

Was there a few times, and did a tour as a civil affairs adviser a few months ago....
Just hit me up on e-mail.

If it makes you feel any better, things are pretty chill these days....A lot of work right now is just packing things up (there is a lot of stuff) so everyone can start leaving. All depends on where ya go and what your job is.

ps. There is this one chick in Bayaa who used to drunk call me at 3am all the time, I can give you her number if ya want.

So which branch did you end up joining? Enlisted or officer/officer candidate?

Best of luck, brother. And I wouldn't necessarily dismiss Homer's chick out of hand. A few months without any and you might change your mind. If you're nice I'm sure he'll show you a pic. Smiley

    fuck you

I'm in the Air Force as an E3. Not the most exciting field in terms of fighting wars, but then again, I'm not very interested in fighting the war--I don't agree with it.

Air Force has more chicks than all the branches. And, Air Force is the best funded of all the branches. Having said that, I don't think I need that Bayaa chick--but you're right mayybe I should hold on to the number just in case. Lol

I will make you the same wish I made to all my buddies who went there, stay safe, come back, that is your ultimate goal actually, to come back, however if you are ever cornered into having to fight, then make some mullahs scream.

LOL, ok...Just to clear that one up.
My job required me to be in contact with local community leaders 24/7, so I had a Iraqnya cell phone. I guess somehow my number got around to some woman (I think though a high school I did some stuff with), and she used to call me at 3am and make sexy talk in arabic/broken english..... I have no idea who she actually is, but it was hella funny.

I'm not kidding, One major from my old battalion married a Kurdish chick he met there....And now he friggen lives in Kurdistan. Hard to believe, but he bought a house there and works for the mayor or something now.

    BTW, you will have internet.
Either free from the MWR, or you can pay a local Iraqi internet provider and get it installed..which is better, because then you dont need to wait in line and can use your own computer.

Cheesy That is pretty fuckin funny.

    - You could die.
    - You could come back with missing body parts.
    - I can't imagine it being much fun.
    - You're fighting in a war you don't agree with.
    - You're fighting in a war started by George Bush.
    - You're fighting in a war.
    - It's scary.
    - No pineapples.

    So, the real question is...why?

He's an E3 in the Air Farce* which means, unless he's a forward air controller in a battle zone, most likely he'll be a REMF (Rear Echelon Motherfucker)* and thus in less danger than on the streets of my neighborhood (or many neighborhoods in the US, and perhaps even the UK too). It's very possible he could be staying within the confines of a heavily secured area for almost the entire deployment. As for it not being fun, well, a lot of it will probably be boring, but he will get the experience of an overseas military deployment, so it will at least be new and interesting, and I imagine he'll even be able to squeeze in some fun too.

But as to the fighting in a war he doesn't agree with-- yeah, I gotta say I kinda don't get that part. Well, actually I do, I was actually recently considering trying to get into the military again out of a desire to do something different and get new experience, but I had previously been kicked out of Army officer training for a criminal conviction, and have had a few arrests since then, so would require a waiver, and even if I got the waiver, my criminal record would definitely exclude me from doing the kind of work I'd really like to do in the Army (human intelligence/intelligence analyst). So I suppose I do "get it", but I certainly couldn't rationally or morally justify it.

*Sorry Tommy-- but you know I am unable to refrain from busting balls. It's some kind of pathological disorder, I think Smiley

or you can pay a local Iraqi internet provider and get it installed..which is better, because then you dont need to wait in line and can use your own computer.

Even a brand-new E3 can get their own internet connection in Iraq? Damn. It's a Brave New World.

    fuck you
