    Hey. I am new to the forums. I am not sure if I can become an ex muslim. The evidence against islam seem to be overwhelming, but I don't know how one can leave their religion. Is it as simple as just not practicing it anymore, and not attending religious institutions? It sounds hard leaving your religion, and I would like some advice on how one does it. After leaving religion I feel a hole in my heart.

    Your ego is so out of whack that it will do whatever it can to protect itself. And people with a messed up ego can do these mental gymnastics to convince themselves they're awesome when really, they're just douchebags!-->Kyle Brolovski

    Hi kikiipeeki.  If you don't believe in it, you have left it.  It is hard, made harder by the attitude of Muslims against people who exercise their freedom of thought.  I quit more than a year ago, and up until today, this minute, am still harassed and bothered by people who are angry about it, as if what I think and believe has an effect on what they think and believe.  You may find some strength you didn't know you had, or you may be one of the lucky ones who is left alone.

    I still don't understand why the majority of the world holds on to religious beliefs? When they are proven to be false by simple examination. It is crazyyyyy.

    I think most people haven't really thought about their religion. They just follow what they were born into and what their parents taught them growing up. Also, the loudest voice usually wins an argument, unfortunately, and religious voices tend to be much louder than the voice of reason.

    What you're going through--we all went through it. Some more than others. Adding on to what Manat said, I'm glad you are here instead of FFI. People here are a lot more mature than peeps at FFI. I'm sure you'll know what I mean by that in due time.

    So do I. Why do you? Do you miss God, community, certainty? Eventually you will get used to not being religious, but like most things, it takes time. As you can see we all still talk about Islam, and religion and God, be it out of concern or needing to work out issues.

    We leave religion by becoming aware that the evidence against it is overwhelming.  Simple as.   Welcome to the forum.   Smiley

    Hi there and welcome to the forum. It's nearly been a year for me since I consciously left Islam. Although I struggled for a very long time.

    Once you stop believing or don't agree with a major tenet of the faith, then you have apostated, whether that is verbally or internally.

    The hole in the heart is the initial issue, we have all had it and have overcome it. Some take longer than others. But once you are over it, you will be glad you have done so.

    There is no need for you to leave anything (unless you are doing something harmful) - just be true to yourself without unnecessarily hurting others.

    Hello Kiki,

    One of the most basic truth I found is that us, humans, have a prime drive to increase our numbers. And when our number becomes too big, we form a sub-group within our number.

    You may leave a religion, but that means you have to give up a large chunk of 'numbers'. You will no longer belong to that number. Also people from the circle you left, will always want you back, so they can count you as one of their number.

    It is a privilege only afforded to us by modern times, that we can survive on smaller numbers. The more educated and financially well-off a person becomes, the less they require a large number around them. They still want the numbesr but they now have the luxury of selection. It becomes a quantity vs quality.

    Another issue is an educated person will realize that islam, though very very good at getting the numbers, Islam also does a lot of damage to the people it counts as its own.
