Tamanna Rahman spent two months living on a Bristol housing estate for the BBC's Panorama programme Undercover: Hate on the Doorstep.

Not good to see. Underclass area, bound to have issues of crime/drugs unfortunately anyway though.

Wow, it's amazing how much I identified with this article.  It reminds me of the time I went to live in a small village in yorkshire for awhile.  I had never experienced racism towards me in the UK up until this point, and all of the sudden I had people judging me for the colour of my skin, calling me a paki (I'm moroccan FFS) and calling my son a paki and throwing stones at him in the garden once.  I even got denied housing in my first application because of the colour my skin.  (Had to take the council to court over it)

I felt so uncomfortable, even when I returned to london in the end, I still felt like everyone was looking at me, that everyone was actually maybe racist deep down.

When you come from a racially diverse area it's so easy to be fooled into thinking that racism is non existant anymore in the uk, but sadly it's not.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Honestly, sometimes it takes actually living in a racist area to have those eyes opened, up until my experience in yorkshire I probably would have naively stated that racism no longer existed in the UK.

Fortunately my eldest doesn't remember any of that, he was just a toddler at the time.

Not surprising unfortunately - big cities like London are one thing, unfortunately there are parts of the country where racism is still visceral, open and alive.

I hate people who say that racism doesn't exist in the UK anymore.

Imho most humans have a tendency towards in-group favoritism and out-group hate. Racism unfortunately is pretty much an unwelcome human trait and I think that potentially all human beings are equally capable of inhumanity which racism certainly is. The most absurd act of racism I ever observed was actually an "English" (his definition) Pakistani racially abusing a Punjabi Pakistani friend of mine.

Underclass area, bound to have issues of crime/drugs unfortunately anyway though.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. If the reporters were to move into an affluent area with lots of residing intellectuals and were themselves "playing" intellectuals I dare say that the outcome would be very different.
Thanks for the link though, will certainly watch Panorama tonight.

I actually know Tamanna from my active Muslim days and we co-hosted a Radio Ramadan programme together back in 2004.  The girl has guts!

My Bengali ex and I bought a house in a mainly white, working class area in East Manchester several years ago and at first I brushed off his apprehensions regarding racial abuse but soon learned that even in a place like Manchester there can be subtle racism.  Many of our neighbours wouldn't give us the time of day and when we got broken into it was my ex who called the police who took 6 HOURS to respond.  When we had another attempted break in I called the police and they came within minutes.

Yes, but not only are they stupid they ruin people's lives and they hide behind all sorts of pretexts too.

There is a rise in racism that has no problem exploiting the just criticisms people like you and I have of Islam.

And regardless of what one thinks of the term "Islamophobia" there are without doubt people who have an exaggerated and irrational hatred towards Islam and Muslims and this is becoming increasingly exploited by those with a wider agenda.

btw the Panorama program is on at 8.30 BBC1 tonight.

I watched the Panorama programme earlier today and wasn't really shocked. I have experienced racism first hand and so has my family so this was reality for me, until I moved out of the area I lived in (surprise, it's Yorkshire again  whistling2)

The area I live in now has more asians occupying the surrounding areas so we hardly get any trouble at all. If the white's here try anything then our boys will have to send 'em to hospital again to have their jaws re-wired.

And I feel sorry for all the other ethnic minority folk of other backgrounds being labelled "paki".....omg. I won't be surprised if they want to distance themselves from pakistanis now and again  grin12

The West Country in general isn't bad at all. Southmead is the shittiest area in Bristol - Bristol, as a whole, however, is quite cosmopolitan.

I wouldn't say that there is no racism in the south west, but it's far better than many other places. Racism is more often less than overt, although in its subtler forms is still pernicious (sometimes, I would say, worse).

I remember this really kind old man who used to live next door to us and he would always come out and tell the bastard kids to bugger off.

I can still recall seeing  his blue face, body motionless on the floor in their house as I rushed next door to see what happened. All I heard was his wife cry as I was getting ready for school one morning...

I hope he knows how much I respected him..... R.I.P Mr Ogilvy

My first though upon watching the programme was WHY AREN'T THESE KIDS IN SCHOOL?!

Then again, their parents probably don't give a shit whether they go to school or not.  Little bastards.

I've been taunted the same way that Tamanna was and I'm as white as any native Brit!  These kids don't give a crap.  I've been called names for being American, for wearing the wrong clothes and even had rocks hurled at me one time by a group of schoolkids.  It left me in tears.  finmad

I was quite pissed off whilst watching that programme too.

I have an 11 yr old son, and I would never leave him just roaming the streets like that, what shitty parenting.

Kids imitate parents though, so it's obvious where all the racism is being learnt.

I never watched the program but this is all coming from what you might call the underclasses and living in Hackney I see it all the time not only from white people but from all of the different groups abusing each other.

This underclass has grown under this Labour government, ill educated, living on benefits, low paid no future jobs, poor parenting skills, some of the estates in Hackney are so run down that my dog has a better home and they have to hate someone for this.

I think that racism was beginning to die out until the government decided that we would become lots of separate groups, so one group would never mix with another group and so become separate to the point that any chance of understanding disappears.
An example of this would be my neighbors, who are hindu,we had lived next door to each other for a year and I had no Idea of who they were, they seemed to ignore me a lot and me them.

Then one night there seemed to be a lot of noise in the street, arguing, shouting and eventually I realised that they had locked themselves out, so I did what most would do, let them into my back garden and lent them a ladder, really a small thing, which over the next 30 years developed into a strong friendship.
This actually spread, so that in the end half of my street were very good friends, in and out of each others homes and lots of get togethers and parties, this coming 5th November will be a party with all of us doing the guy fawkes thing.
So, my point being that it is not all bad in this country.

It looks like the little shit has been arrested....

    Quote
A 22-year-old man and an 11-year boy have been arrested following BBC One's Panorama documentary exposing racism in the Southmead area of Bristol.

Avon and Somerset Police said the pair had been arrested on suspicion of racially-aggravated assault.

The programme featured two Asian reporters posing as a married couple living on an estate for two months.

They recorded more than 50 instances of racism and suffered both verbal and physical abuse while living there.

The 11-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery.

Spot on, I think the benefits need to be limited.

    Nice post Arthur Smiley

Left next door neighbors - don't really know them. But the neighbors on the right I try and make an effort, though my parents not so much. I'm not sure how much politicians can enforce integration into society. Separated faith schools won't help. Zakir Naik wont help. Teaching a common understanding of what life and the universe is just might help the younger generation.

Sorry to hear the other stories guy ... gosh.

My children called the older boys uncle and their mum aunty. There's no reason that I can see that means we all have to be seperate,at the end of the day we all want the same things, a home, security, a job, good schools, medical attention if we need it, decent police force that protects us and our families. A fair justice system and as a democracy that's what we should all be aiming for.

Our society has some how produced these ferral children and now we can't, so to speak, put them back in the box.

yep , nothing like burning effigies of catholic usurpers as a way of creating religious harmony  grin12

cheapshot , I know , but it struck me as funny .

While we are on the subject I had an experience a couple of years back in London,  . I had been going out with an Indian woman for a few months and it struck us that we had never been to an indian restuarant, I took her to one I had frequented often , great food and the staff were always friendly , had been there at least 30 times before over 2 years , the night I went with her you could feel the change. At first it was just a standoffish-ness on the part of the waiter and the boss who usually welcomes with gusto. I thought it may just be my imagination , we continued the meal and at some point I must have said something nice as she leant over and pecked my cheek.  The disdain was then palpable , plates were dumped down hard , requests for more wine were answered with a grunt, the bill came as soon as the wine did. Im just pleased she didnt kiss me before the meal was served , god knows what plate of revenge would have been served up.
When we left I told her what I thought had been going on and she laughed ,I thought she was going to tell me it was all my imagination  but then she said she heard the racist stuff  they were saying in Punjabi about us and that was why she had kissed me , just to piss them off  grin12

According to the polls only 1.6 % of Americans are athiests. So what gives you the right to call the other 80% morons?'
