Awesome. Got another one for you.

Since in a minority of cases women in heterosexual relationships get the crap beaten out of them by their male partners, it follows that women should be banned from having heterosexual relationships.

Same logic. Are you in favour? Yes or no?

Explain step by step why such a ridiculous comparison is "the same logic".

The logic of the comparison is self-evident to anybody who reads your post...

My argument is that even if it happens in a minority of cases that in itself is sufficient to support such bans.

"Providing evidence" that a particular female is being pressurized or intimidated into wearing Islamic dress against their will is of course nigh on impossible because of the individual's fear of "speaking out".

I have several friends who wear the full hijab and opurdah and they choose too...One of them comes from a family who were against her wearing it coz they were modern and felt she would not find anyone suitable to marry. Not all women are pressurised to wear it, many make the choice because they believe it frees them, although I don't understand how, the fact remains that many women choose to wear the hijab and purdah. I agree there are some women who are forced into it, but the community I'm from (which is largely muslim) I haven't met one who has complained about wearing it.

"felt she would not find anyone suitable to marry"

Why did she feel such pressure to get married? Why do some women treat marriage as if it were the pinnacle of their life and if they don't get it by the age of 30, they're a dried up fruit cake?

Yeh, some women are like that...I've enevr understood it myself..even though all my life I was told i was gunna get married to one of the idiots in Pakistan and for most of my life I accepted it, but then when you look around and see every single married person is miserable and loney anyway you don't really see the point anymore. I knew a girl who wanted to marry because she couldn't wait to have sex....Yes...that was the only thing on her mind then...Poor sods..

    Which could get her killed.

So then you set up robust protection, relocation, and educational/job training programs* for women who feel too intimidated to refuse wearing the burkha/niqab, and ensure these women get custody of the kids. See, DH, that's the non-authoritarian solution. That's how people who actually want to defend a liberal society think, not how those who claim to be defending liberal society through illiberal and authoritarian methods.

*In addition to that, if this ever became a serious issue in the US, I'd favor free firearms training classes too and an expedited process for such women to obtain concealed carry permits in states which have lengthier and more restrictive procedures for obtaining them. Although I'm against the state imposing blanket bans and other authoritarian measures, I'm all for a woman blowing the fuckin head off of any man who physically intimidates/oppresses/threatens her.

I already have I think. I'm away from home at Uni and when the subject of marraige comes up I just say no way. My dad did get a lil freaky once when I was 14/15 and told me I wasn't allowed to go to college but my mum helped me out a lot. I suppose it was because her dad did something similar to her and she regretted not have the education she deserved. When they ask now I just say no, and they get a lil worried that I maybe a lesbian, which doesn't really bother me  001_tongue

Another thing is I'm not afraid to say no anymore, I used to be and did everything my parents told me. I'm nowhere near like that now, and when my friends, who are in their 20s, talk about how they have to listen to their parents I find it a little annoying that they don't even try to get out of the oppressive situation. They just say when I get married it'll all work out, but when they do I'm sure it'll just be the same situation all over again.

Me too - I dont understand why some Muslims just dont say 'No'.  It really is that easy - its the aftershock that is the problem, but that needs to be weighed up against the alternative of marrying someone they dont want.

I wonder some times wonder whether people should be encouraged to have pre-marital sex just so that they can get that horniness out of the system so they don't make decisions based on simply wanting someone to bonk.

I know these women, trust me, they're more talkative than I am, and if something was pissing them off even the slightist they would say something. These girls are not the type to suffer silently or whatever...

Many people expect them to be shy and modest, but their the opposite, they stick up for themselves, even got into fights in high school! They don't see if as self sacrifice though. I remeber one of my friends told me that a woman is like a pearl and she should be covered so she is protected, and she said it with a lot of pride. I don't believe in that, but she does and that's all that mattered.

Me too - I dont understand why some Muslims just dont say 'No'.  It really is that easy - its the aftershock that is the problem, but that needs to be weighed up against the alternative of marrying someone they dont want.

Same here! I have talked to many of these types of girls, one in particular, but she seems to delude herself that if she keeps them happy, she'll be happy....Right now neither is happy..still!

Comments (71) Add to My Stories  Respect for the burka: Cambridge has clarified that clothing linked to religious observance is allowed at graduation

Cambridge University will allow female Muslim students to wear burkas at graduation ceremonies, it emerged yesterday.
By tradition, students are required to wear dark suits and white shirts under their graduation gowns.
Cambridge has clamped down on breaches of the rules after officials complained students were increasingly wearing casual clothes to ceremonies.
They warned the code 'is strictly enforced at ceremonies, and if you do not observe it, you may not be permitted to graduate on a particular occasion'.
Yesterday it clarified that clothing linked to religious observance, such as burkas, would still be allowed.
Scottish students who want to wear kilts instead of the regulation dark suits and white bow-ties have already challenged the rules.
After an outcry, the university said the wearing of kilts, saris and kimonos would be allowed at the discretion of individual colleges.
Yesterday, it said burkas could also be worn under mortar boards to graduation ceremonies, as well as during tutorials and lectures.

Membership of Cambridge's Islamic Society suggests it has around 600 Muslim students.

A university spokesman said: 'Religious dress and cultural observations are allowed at graduation.
'If a student has a religious or cultural obligation to wear something then we absolutely respect that.'

The news follows a row last week after Burnley College in Lancashire asked a student to remove her burka as she enrolled for a course.
Shawana Bilqes, 18, wanted to wear the garment, which leaves only her eyes and hands visible, during lessons.
But principal John Smith said 'unimpeded' face-to-face contact between teachers and students was vital. He pointed out that students and staff must wear photo ID for security.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw exposed tensions over the burka in 2006 after he suggested Muslim women should abandon it because it was a 'visible statement of separation and difference'.
In France, it has been banned in state schools since 2004

They cannot therefore be regarded as allies against so-called "political Islam" then can they?

I keep getting this fantasy that one day, they will look at their graduation picture and regret being such an idiot and sacrificing the best years of their life to some desert demon or another. As for the muslim grads, they will also regret the extra physical punishments they took upon themselves.
