  • Who here has been to...
     OP - November 05, 2009, 02:51 PM

    Belguim? Brussels, in particular.

We're planning on going away for a week in December, so I was wondering whether anyone has any recommendations with regards to hotels/food/culture/night life Smiley

Yes, don't go. It's boring, cold and horrible. A statue of a boy pissing is as exciting as it gets. But you don't have to take my word for it.  How about Amsterdam, Madrid, Paris, Rome, Dublin, Budapest - they're all the same kind of fare, unless you were thinking of driving?

    Ha Ha.

Oh? I got the impression it is full of culture (churches, muesums, gardens), good food (mussels, waffles, chocolate!) and some of the best beer in the world. We would venture out to Bruge as well. This is the first time we're going onto mainland Europe and gaging from the views of friends who have been and really enjoyed it I reckon we will too dance

Don't listen to them, come to Valletta.  The sun shines 363 days of the year here..

It's not bad. I think the best part is the town square - has more gold/gilt than any other I've seen in Europe.

Try the oysters, chocolate and fruity-ish beers.

There are good social outdoor gatherings, try googling them.

Try other cities nearby, they have festivals on like in Ghent (there was a nice musical fest on there), Antwerp, possibly Namur.

European parliament area is good on a Friday afternoon/evening.

Any city is what you make of it - try tripadviser.com for more info, esp their top 10 things to do.

Went there as part of a History school trip to Ypres (discover more about the background of battles in WW2), but never been Brussels. Chocolate is obviously one of the highlights of the trip, that, and one of my classmates managing to piss off the locals over there.

I've heard Brussels is filthy but that Bruges is lovely.  I'm sure the chocolate is to die for.
