But believing in one, even if it turns out there is not one, can't hurt.

Tell that to the people who have been killed in the name of religion over the past few millenia.  Wink

I'm not disputing those points, Trumora. I was disputing the claim that believing in a deity cannot do any harm.

I am an atheist, and that means I lack belief in any deity.  It isn't a positive belief, its a lack of one.  Calling atheism a belief is like calling bald a hair colour.

    I didn't call it a religion.

I still defend that anything can be transformed into a set of beliefs when people are really crazy. I met one wacko guy into that raw food thing. He was really crazy about it and wouldn't stop talking how we should eat raw food blah blah meat is bad blah blah. He dated a friend of mine for some time. I don't know how she could stand him. Raw food was a religion to that man, I swear to Lettuce.

Kim, change your name, and your avatar, and lay low for a while.

Why should I hide myself like I'm ashamed of my choices?

It is still a belief in the sense that you believe there is no God.

    No, I don't.  I just lack belief in a deity, that's why its called a-theist.  I don't have a belief, I just lack one.

Calling atheism a belief is silly, its like saying not playing chess is a hobby.   Roll Eyes

I don't know about the Aztec religion, so I'm not sure how to answer you. People kill each other over politics, also. It's not always just religion.

Dude (I assume you are a dude but correct me if I'm wrong), methinks you have totally misunderstood what people have been telling you. Allow me to elucidate. Smiley

1/ There are a range of attitudes that fall under the general umbrella of "atheism".
2/ Yes, some nutters are totally, religious fundamentalist to the max, "certain" that there is no deity.
3/ Yes, this can be called a belief. It can even be called a religion of sorts (albeit a rather odd sort).
4/ This is not a description of all people that regard themselves as atheists.
5/ The sane ones say that they see no evidence for any deity, and therefore they see no reason why they should believe in any deity.
6/ This is not the same as 2/. Far from it.
7/ If you can't see the difference that's your problem, mate.   bunny

and still death threats for apostating are thrown right and left. I live in a part of the world... Now... The year 2009 nearly ending and 2010 is almost here, and I am afraid if one finds out about my views about religion I might be killed. Not from goverment, although that is a written law, but from ordinary people. I mean it would only take one person to point at me screaming: Here is a kafir who said Mohamad (saw) was a pedophile, and I would be stoned to death!!!

You can see it any way you like, you are still ignoring the first hand testimony of an atheist.  I don't "believe" that there is not a God, I just lack belief in a deity.  Can you not discern the difference?  Even after the analogies I have given you to help?

Nope, I'm a dudette Wink haha
And I understand exactly what you're saying. When I say that I think Atheism is a belief, I don't mean it like you are still believing  in a God, or something of that nature, I just mean that there are certain things you believe in which make you an atheist (i.e. the things you mentioned above), so I still see it as a set of beliefs.

Ok cool. So this means I can go around arguing with theists that they don't have any religious beliefs. I mean if you can tell atheists they are religious, I can fuck around with the minds of theists. Cheesy

not really. As some said before, there are atheist who behave as it is a belief, but, in reality, Atheism is a lack of a belief. Being the lack of something means you can be that something. Furthermore, not all atheists behave the same towards this issue so it can be a set of beliefs because it's different for each individual.
