  • Hello to all :)
     OP - November 21, 2009, 06:51 PM

Hello everyone! My name is Kendra and I really don't know where to begin.

Well, I was raised Southern Baptist, forced into private Christian schools when I in middle school and that is where my path to agnosticism began. I fell in love with Islam at 16, converted three weeks after my 17th birthday(I'm 18 now). Oh dear god, don't get me started on all the silly mess I did. 6 months into my conversion, I began to see the contradictions, double standards and things that no matter how you wrapped it up, it was still abuse. So I left Islam and while most Muslims friends want nothing to do with me, I'm one of the lucky few that wasn't harrassed because of it.

I really haven't come clean to some family members, because most of them are militant Muslims.

Welcome Mangostar! Mango is my favourite fruit btw, but anywho lol. What made you decide to convert to Islam? What is it like being a non muslim now? and when you left, what did most of your muslim friends say? I know they ditched you but what did they say to you in person? Do you have to make new friends now? I know it can be tough  Cry

Oh they went absolutely nuts. Calling me all sorts of names and talking mess about me to other people. It got to the point where I had a long list of blocked users from my facebook and had to change my phone number. I'm actually writing my story, its quite crazy. I love Mangos too!!

Most in my family are Christians, and the others are Muslims. So its half in half. The Muslim side of my family would blow up if they knew I left.

My mother is Christian. I don't know about my father. All I know about him is that he's in federal prison and recently found religion.

Im sorry to hear that. I was just trying to work out why relatives other than your parents have any right to 'blow up'. I mean, how were they when you went to Christian school all those years? What do you fear they will do?

    Ha Ha.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone Cheesy

My fear is that they'll ignore me. Consider me dead just like all the other Muslims I know. While I don't care for the others, they're still my family and it would upset me. They aren't crazy enough to go kidnap and murder me.  When I lived in Memphis and went to private schools, they really didn't have much communication with me. It wasn't until I became a high schooler and moved to Mississippi.

They'll blow up because they'll feel as if I betrayed them. Just as my born again Christian grandmother feels like I betrayed her.

What sort of Muslims are they? Salafi, WD, sufis, etc?  My personal experiences with those who follow WD style is that they're a little more tolerant because so many in the third generation no longer believe in or practise Islam.  But every family is diff.

I'm thinking its Islam as well or Prislam at the least. I highly doubt its changed him. Its just given him a justification for his past behavior. I used to live in TN, until mama felt it was time to move so we ended up in North MS. I love Mangos myself. The only good thing that came from associating with the Pakistani Muslims here were mangoes and Shahrukh Khan.
