  • I want a tattoo
     OP - November 23, 2009, 03:01 PM

I'm not getting it for several months (need money first), I'm just pondering what to get atm.

I'll probably get one based on LOTR. I'm thinking of getting some sort of sword going down my back but that's a bit boring, I want to do something cool with it. I was thinking of maybe using one of the sword inscriptions and shape it into a sword. I'll probably have to get one designed for me first.

Any creative people here have any good ideas on what to do with it?

I have been toying with that idea for a while. Might have my daughters name in sanskrit or Chinese or Latin

be sure to ask someone to verify that. I speak Japanese and I have a lot of fun with people's tattoos they "think" it says something.

once I saw this very muscular guy without a shirt with a big ideogram that said "rice" on his back. I laughed so much... I know that was probably not what he had in mind.

Personally a tattoo must mean something to me.  I will only do them if I achieve certain goals I have in mind.  And they won't be any of that graphics or tribal shite...  I'll most probably end up doing this one

Actually it becomes grammatically incorrect when you omit the last 2 words (Ila Allah), and the sentence has to be changed to mean "There is no God", but the satirical value of it will be lost.
But I don't think it is a good idea anyways, cuz there are a lot of people who will get 'offended'. A T-Shirt would be good for that idea.

LOTR means a lot to me, I'm a geek Wink I have the one ring which I've been wearing for 4 years. I love that movie! I've seen some very cool LotR tattoos online, might take some ideas from them.

Because I will get confused for a muslim. Plus I don't need a constant reminder of Islam on my back, I want to move away from religion altogether.

In fact why not do away with the Arabic if you're brave enough, and leave it in English for everyone to read.

I can't imagine getting a tattoo for anything else than memorializing a dead person or maybe if I was in a military group where we risked our lives together then I'd tattoo my regiment number.
Can anyone really like swords so much that want a sword on their body forever? My buddy got a tweety bird on his shoulder. I can't imagine his connection with tweety bird was so deep that he needed to make a perminent commitment like that.
If a tattoo doesn't mean anything then it's just graffitti. But that's just me. Ink away.

Thats the exact way I feel. My roommate from SF said the same thing, and he has only one tattoo--the symbol of his Navy Seal trident with his team number. If I ever get a tattoo, it'll be something meaningful like that.

    Peruvian,

As someone who appreciates tattoos (and has several herself!) I definitely recommend you first build up a good reference base of designs which appeal to you.  Go online and Google LOTR tattoos, go to a bookshop and check out some of the books of tattoo photos and also magazines like 'Skin Deep', 'Total Tattoo', etc.

Then, when you are ready you must find a reputable tattoo artist, this is usually done by word of mouth so if you do not have anyone in mind perhaps you can ask any of your friends or anyone on the street who a a tattoo which you like who did it for them.

Once you've got some names of reputable artists you should arrange to have a consultation with them to find out how much they charge (by the hour if it's a large piece) and see what kind of artistic input they may have to make to your idea.  These guys, if good, know what they are doing so if they suggest a minor modification to your design, don't take it personally, they are only thinking of the aesthetics of the finished piece as a design on paper will not automatically transfer to skin without some minor changes being made.

I wish you all the best and good luck!

P.S.  I STILL want to get my half-sleeve but shortage of funds has made me have to put it off for the time being.  Cry

I agree with Bob and Tommy.

Peruvian, you should get a tattoo of your gang affiliation. "Mad Murtads 13" in Gothic script across your upper back/shoulders and "FUCK ISLAM" on your knuckles.

I love swords, seriously love them. Always have done. I don't put as much meaning into a tattoo as you do but still want something I love which is essentially what I'm getting.

That is exactly what I will be doing, I found some amazing LotR tattoos earlier when I was looking, had a look at some of the other works by that tattoo artist too. Will probably incorporate those ideas. I'm not much of an artist though.

Don't worry, I'll be sitting on my final design for several months before I get it done. I've had other ideas which I've changed my mind on so I wont make any rash decisions.

How old are you, may I ask?
My stepdad has very likely over 50 tattoos. He even made one of a drawing I did for him when I was little. But he says the ones he likes the least are the ones he did when he was very young. However, he does go by that lots of tattoos look which suits him and it's a different look from just one tattoo. All of them have some kind of meaning. I really like his tattoos and all my friends were always like "wow, that's your dad? he's cool". LOL
I would never make one myself, I think. I probably would get bored of it quickly. Maybe one on the back? I dunno... "go away fairy thing!"  Cheesy Nah... I wouldn't make a fairy.  Tongue

I am anti-tattoo.  These kinda permanent body alterations aren't a good idea in my books.  Plain flawless smooth skin always looks better on girls (sorry, just stating my opinion).

If I was a girl and I wanted to funk my skin up I'd go the henna route.  Have a look at Shilpa Shettys beautiful henna designs (on her wedding day):

Try not to rush and make sure that you know everthing it involves.  Remember that your views about tatoos (and everything else) might also change in the future.
