  • Why do theists visit atheist forums, blogs?
     OP - November 24, 2009, 07:12 PM

An interesting post from a-blogger Greta Christina on one reason why some theists may visit atheist blogs, forums, etc.

    http://gretachristina.typepad.com/greta_christinas_weblog/2009/11/their-first-steps-atheism-patience-2.html

    Quote
But a big part of why I kept on reading it was that I was testing the waters of my religion, and of letting it go. I wanted to think more carefully about what I believed and why. I didn't want to believe out of wishful thinking anymore: I wanted to know whether my beliefs were defensible, consistent, supported by evidence or at least not flatly contradicted by it.

    and

    Quote
They've always thought their beliefs were reasonable -- but now, they're having some doubts. They don't just want to accept what they've been taught/ what they want to believe, and move on with an unexamined life; they want to examine their beliefs and make sure they make sense. (Julia Sweeney leaps to mind.) They've heard about atheism -- it's hard not to these days -- and this option they'd never seriously considered is now all up in their face, so they want to give it a fair shake.

In other words: They're proto-atheists. Any formerly-religious atheist knows that these kinds of doubts and questions and investigations are the first cracks in the foundation of faith. These folks -- some of them, anyway, maybe a lot of them -- are taking their first steps to atheism.

I know I saw this forum a few times before I really said 'Enough is enough', as well as FFI, apostatesofislam.com, and a few of those other sites.  I wanted to see what the ex-Muslim arguments were.  Ultimately, it wasn't ex-Muslim arguments that won me over, but it was just testing the waters -- leaving Islam is the ultimate taboo, one that can put your life in danger.  I wanted to see who and what was  out there first.

    This is bang on.

Though I might add that they might also not become atheists, but agnostic, or deist or pantheist or adopt some other philosophy that makes sense to them. But yeah they are on their way out of the mental prisons of organized religion and that's a good thing.

nah its out of an arrogent sense that they could convince atheists to see how silly they are

Is this an atheist forum? (this is a real question, btw.)

I agree with her tough. I also have the feeling that most theists visit atheist blogs because deep down and many times uncounsciously they have doubts themselves and want to teste the other side. (maybe she said something else, I dunno)

I do because I'm curious and I'm a film maker. So people's comments and arguments are interesting to me. As well as I don't want to talk to only people who agree with me. That would be just boring.

No, it's an open forum that's designed first as a place for exmuslims, and their supporters and friends, but is open to all (except trolls). It just so happens to be that most exmuslims realize the presence of fallacies, contradictions and inhumanity inherent in all religions. So they tend to be atheists, or agnostics or deist, pantheists etc etc. You can see a list here: http://www.councilofexmuslims.com/index.php?topic=5268.msg171465#msg171465 and that is always changing as we don't feel the need to dogmatically stick to 1 label or definition.

I couldnt resist commenting.  Doubtfool if you are a 'good muslim' you wouldnt denigrate others beliefs nor speak so arrogantly.  But it seems there are arrogant arseholes on both sides (eh Allat)  I would agree more with trumora.  It is good to test ones beliefs and try to understand others perspectives.  I think a constant rejuvenation is important and I hope that allows me to share my islamic faith in a meaningful way.  Though I am sorry to say I don't think this really happens here in a meaningful way.  And ultimately actions count for more...real friendships and interaction between differing faiths and beleifs is the best way to break down barriers to understanding.

    Peace.

Ah, gotcha. Yes definitely, I'd say human stupidity and dogmatism are not limited to any 1 group of humans however defined and distinguished from other groups of humans. It's part of us. Just like goodness, kindness, search for pleasure, meaning and comfort are.

definitely. Go have a chat with radical propagandist vegans. I know some. It's always interesting.

... maybe also because I've met so many very crazy and radical vegetarians, vegans and raw food people in my life that I used to think "Wow... it's a religion to them". And I always thought it was funny when these same people started to bad mouth religion. "Interesting", was my thought.

to submissive Bob.  So how do you "open" yourself.  I think the clatter of the background noise sometimes makes us forget how to be open.  Do you still practice any form of prayer/meditation

I have to admit.. I sometimes visit and sign up to Islamic forums. Mainly for trolling and comedic purposes. I never ever go in as an honest ex-muslim though. I tried that once, they ban us very quick. I find Muslim forums will accept Christians and even atheists, as long as their not ex-muslims.

Agreed.  The problem I've always had with religious people is the group think mentality they've tuned themselves into thus making any discussion that possible could challenge their beliefs nothing less than an exercise of defensiveness on the religionists part.

It isn't the God thing that irks many atheists but the group think mentality.
