Bin Laden: "Its OK to surrender"?

I just read an interesting account of the final hours of the battle at Tora Bora. The man leading the Delta Force team was listening to Bin Laden on the radio and these were his final word:
"Our prayers were not answered. Times are dire and bad. We did not get support from the apostate nations who call themselves our Muslim brothers. Things might have been different (...) "I'm sorry for getting you involved in this battle, if you can no longer resist, you may surrender with my blessing"
I thought AQ were the ultimate martyrs, convinced and ever ready to embrace death? How do we square that with this account?

"By the One in Whose Hand my soul is, were you not to commit sins, Allah would replace you with a people who would commit sins and then seek forgiveness from Allah; and Allah would forgive them." [Saheeh Muslim]
"Wherever you are, death will find you, Even in the looming tower."
