    Hi folks,

Are you still angry with Islam?

    If so why so?

    If not why not?

Not in anymore, at least not in the general sense. The violence and intolerance that Islam encourages in its followers still angers me. But I'm no longer angry at the religion itself.

I was very very angry and had become the typical "raging murtad" during the 1st year after my leaving the religion. I would rant and rave about Muhammad and Islam at every oppurtunity, on the net, among friends and at my parents.

I've been an unbeliever for over 4 years now so I have had time to cool down and realize life in general is fucked. Religion just is the icing on that turd cake.

I do still feel angry - not sure if it's Islam, God or myself that I'm angry with.

Well I have talked about this many times on this forum - I'm at times Agnostic and at times a sort of pantheist - but at all times: "I don't know."

What I mean by angry with God is not the God that may actually exist - but rather the concept of God that is presented in the Abrahamic religions.

What angers me sometimes is looking back.. how could I be so stupid? Its not like I was born into a fundamentalist family. Religious ideas were told to us in a half-hearted manner, not much real indoctrination when I was young. I became religious on my own regard and my own reading during my teens.

The fact that I let myself get duped by Islam at that age kind of angers me since I have no one to blame but myself. I feel thoroughy embarrassed and ashamed of it to this day.

so you are only angry with Islam.  Unless of course God does exist in which case you will be angry with yourself.  Is that correct

I am not angry at Islam at such, its just was just another example of ancient tribal norms, predjudices & injustices i.e. a product of its time & environment - however i am angry at how it denigrates ordinary intelligent humans into slavish androidal zombies, and the arrogance shown by some by their self-championing yet farcical attempts to force it into a modern context and then convince others to become & do like them.

There is no need to be negative about it, it was a phase which has no passed and made you even stronger and more mature as a person.  Self flagellation will not help...

no, i wasnt even referring to fundamentalist islam - I have a lot more to say about them but they are a minority in any case.  I was referring to the ordinary muslim who has a distrust of Jews, uneasy about homosexuality, science unless it fits in with Islam, and modernisation.

Not a stereotype, go to your average mosque lecture, or read the quran - its all in there, and there is a whole generation of muslims who have sucked it up (as they should do if they are honest muslims)

    What are you doing here?

trying to understand your anger and your beliefs.  You do define yourselves by what you are not which seems a kinda single issue obsession.  I was interested hear to learn if your defining yourselves by a negative has some psychological element and would be expressed by anger such as you are enquiring about.  And maybe you could indicate if you are happier now with your new found beliefs

What do you mean by the truth? Do you mean that I know Islam is bullshit? Yes, I am happy that I realised that.

Do you mean do I know the purpose of life and why we are here and what this is all about?

    No I don't know that.

Actually I asked you on another thread - what is the purpose of life in your opinion?

    You said:

Do you not get it Hassan?  At least the atheist argument is coherent even if it is little more than "shit happens".  The theist argument is not too different but merely that shit happens for a purpose.

You think the Theist Argument makes sense? You say shit happens for a purpose?

Sorry but it can only make sense if that purpose is 'known'. Until then it is only a baseless claim.

    So what is purpose?

One might accept such terrible suffering if one knew it was necessary in order to fulfill some wonderful purpose.

So do tell me what it is - I'm all ears?

All I see in the Qur'an is a God who makes people suffer for no other reason other than to complete a 'test' (that he knew the outcome of) and which he claims will justify putting some of his creatures in eternal paradise and some in eternal Hell.

OK - I wasnt trying to convince you though - its what I genuinely believe after spending far too much time on it, far more than some fable by a hallucinatory desert bandito ever deserved. Again thats not being disrespectul, its what I believe.

I lost my religion over many years. I don't have belief any more. Neither did I reject my faith out of anger.

Does that mean I am not passionate about say Gender-Segregation, Limb chopping, stoning to death or the indian Caste system?

    No.

Sorry but I can get back to your other points but wanted to clarify.  You know islam is bullshit, and thats the truth.  But you are not sure God exists?  If he does exist wouldnt you concede it would be beyond you to constrain what god is or isn't and therefore Islam could be 'his religion' you can't know it is not.  That aside from the fact that your negative presentation of the Abrahamic god is contested.

I don't think any of use "define" ourselves exclusively as ex-muslims. As far as my ethical philosophy goes i'm a secular humanist, rationalist and atheist. A lot of us have been practicing devout muslims for at least some years so it would be silly to deny the impact that experience had on our lives. Hence we also tag on 'ex-muslim'. Also some of us are still very much linked to islam because of our families and origins. So we still have a non-voluntary interest in the religion and community.

And fact is that Islam is still a very aggressive and active ideology. If Islam was benign and didn't bother the world with its bullshit, this site and the need to identify ourselves as "ex-muslims" would not be required.

OK but I as a muslim am against those points

Haha  Pascal's wager...  There are two other Abrahamic faiths as well, one of them could also be 'his religion' and not necessarily Islam..
