I haven't seen the documentary but the underlying thesis is that it is the institutions that have been built up which is at the core of what is wrong (hence his maligning of the cleric class).

What you mean, can u define the relation between the built institutions and the cleric class?

"Ask the slave girl; she will tell you the truth.' So the Apostle called Burayra to ask her. Ali got up and gave her a violent beating first, saying, 'Tell the Apostle the truth.'"

The clerical class is a part of the institution; institution include theology (dogma), universities, hierarchy and so forth.

For example madhabs, Muhammad's (and prophets) sinlessness, the Qur'an being eternal rather than something made in time, the development of hadith and sunnah, the movement to sharia from dynamic into deterministic methodology.

The problem is that clerics have taken it upon themselves to decide what is Islam and what isn't Islam to the point that diversity is crushed in favour of this, "this is the true Islam and if you fall outside it, you're not a 'true Muslim'".

    Sex pistols describes Muhammad well:

    Quote
I am an anti-Christ, I am an anarchist, Don't know what I want. But I know how to get it. I wanna destroy the passer by 'Cos I wanna be anarchy.

Now, all I need to find is a head banging Muhammad to go with it Tongue

Whoa! Hold on a second there. I know for a fact (it doesn't take a genius) that 99% of punk rock is absolute garbage. The 1% that is exceptional will always stand out and make critics shut the fuck up. The second part is accurate.

As for Taqwacore? Most latter-day punk rockers know full well that it's delusional drivel.

Middle class identity-crisis Muslims wanting to have something hip attached to Islam, posturing like snotty skinny white boys, perpetual teenage whinging, too afraid to just kick Islam to the kerb altogether.

Just make music and enjoy -- stop frigging sectarianising music for fucks sake! Just make music for musics sake! Like everyone else does!

I don't know about now, but I know that some of the peeps in the 'original bands' they weren't happy with the 'punk Islam' label and felt that it was the media putting that on them for an angle to 'sell'  - some of the bands had one Arab member in it and Newsweek's calling them 'punk Islam!'  Also, lol, some people have money to make off of this shit.  I mean the people who are making movies about it or lol selling books on it.

Then you have people like CAIR or ISNA whose dicks got all hard because they thought they could use these guys to mainstream Islam and do dawahganda and invite them up to the convention not even knowing what they were.  So many people were laughing when they got on stage and start singing songs about imams being gay and shit like that and then ISNA gets the cops in to kick the bands out.  Fucking hacks.  Cowards.

Being middle class kids of privilege doesn't mean one doesn't feel alienation, rage, confusion... can't discount that just because their parents are docs and engineers.  I mean, has anyone ever met a Muslim who wasn't mired in identify confusion? That's what being Muslim in the west today is all about.  And didn't punk back in the day touch a lot of middle class kids?  I'd rather upper middle class confused Desi kids play punk than those shitty R&B style 'nasheeds' that were making the rounds a few years ago on the convention circuit.  Although I admit I think it's kind of funny that like, one of the bands has a guy in it who's a doctor.  So he's not even living the life that Mike Knight lived.  It's alright, nothing wrong with being a doctor, I just find it funny.

Indeed. This is exactly how I view that artificial mini-movement. They use props like Allah jewellry to sell their image but are way too chicken to really face the harsh reality that they are simply engaging in an exercise in false consciousness.

Who the hell do they think they are fooling besides themselves? Note the Hezbollah t-shirt that the guy on the left is wearing.

I agree with this but then again music tends to get sectarianized rather easily. Just look at how British punk rock led into American 80's hardcore and see how even a minimum of harmony and melody turned into a cacaphony of pneumatic  sledgehammering. Which, in my view, killed off a lot of punk rock and marginalized a lot of great music. Sectarianization is inevitable (just look at how jazz developed for a fine example) but any new trends, genres, etc are deserving of criticism and even condemnation. Tawqacore is no exception.

    Good points mate.

Their music is old recycled cliche, no more original than the latest pop song on the charts -- it just postures at originality and non-conformity. The issue about sectarianising music also involves breaking music down into religious-identity politics blocks. It just seems another manifestation of the impulse to Islamify everything.

Middle class teenage whinging -- its the most priveliged form of alienation, rage and anger. You always have mummy and daddy and an expensive education and their welcoming bourgeoise safety-net to fall back on. Priveliged rage, priveliged anger, priveliged identity-crisis, useless, comedic priveliged posturing.

Great, we'll hear a grungy hairy guy guy talk about shagging 6 year old girls, beating wives and killing uppity poets being the greatest of behaviours courtesy of Muhammad.
