  • Do you ever find yourself praying?
     OP - December 17, 2009, 05:48 AM

For ex muslims or ex whatevers, do you ever find yourself accidentally saying a little dua or prayer to Allah? I do sometimes and I hate it. Its sometimes so natural to say "inshallah" or I actually have to fight the urge to say it. It pisses me off  furious.

I say it because most people around me are Muslims, plus it doesnt really bother me saying the most diplomatic statement 'Inshallah' around for those who cant do anything right  Tongue

No not really. I'm sure if I reached a very tight spot where there was little hope I might have an urge to pray. But my general disconnection with Islam, Muslims and religious people for the last 4-5 years has pretty much beat the prayer out of me.

no for me there is no one to pray to. It is an obsolete dogma

I guess it depends on whether the pray is an act of reaching out to 'God' or whether one is doing it as a force of habit when the attempt is at self reflection.

Mind you, I 'prayed' but I never really felt anything in it - it was a matter of going through the motions one expects when at school. Not that I'm anti-religious but I just didn't feel a connection with what was being said.

    @awais

you have to make yourself feel something, reach in deep, and bring out that faith, and that light will shine

    thats what i did

until i couldnt be bothered anymore, it was too much of an emotional strain to clear all my thoughts and try to be as emotional as possible when praying while my thoughts were swarming with blasphemous thoughts and criticisms, something i always found puzzling since i also kept repeating azube bel lah men el shatian al ragim Cheesy haha

I am now praying the actual prayer cuz I am back home for the Christmas break. Amazingly I still pray in the same way I used to do. No feeling at all, I never actually felt anything spiritual when I prayed while I was a Muslim.

Aside from that, I do say Insha'llah or Alhamdulillah when speaking with Arab friends even those who know of my apostasy. It's just a habit and a one hard to get rid of, not to mention that it became an integral part of the Arabic language, where alternatives might sound ridiculous and just rebellious for the sake of being rebellious.

As for Dua, I don't do any. I just say it to pay lip service to family and friends who don't know about my apostasy. I hate being a hypocrite, but have no choice.

No, I'm well past any accidental mental slip ups, no inshallah, no bismillah, no prayer for anyone since there is no one to pray to that I believe in anyway.

Haha I don't even do the whole drunken "please god, I'll never drink again if you just stop the room spinning" scene that I once did when I first got drunk.  Cheesy

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I still do the Insha-Allah's and Masha-Allah's now and then. I don't pray or anything like that. I don't say "alvida" or "adaab" in place of "aslamo-alaikum" because they just sound as though you have some sort of point to make. Also I don't want to sound like some sort of nawaab from Delhi of Lucknow!

for me the phrases are rather in English. I say "oh god", oh lord", "oh my god".  Old habits do die hard

No, but I accidentally say Allhamdolillah occasionally when I sneeze

I almost always say it, at least in my heart. I realize it fast though.
