    Hi all,

I see there is a Chess Thingy :-)

I love chess...but not very good at it.

So who is average player round here that I can play with....and how do you play this chess Thingy here.

    Is time based?

Doesn't seem to be time-based. Allat hasn't made a move in our game since June. Mind you she was winning so this is probably good.  Cheesy

If you click the challenge link at the upper right of the chess page you can type in anyone's username and they get a PM asking if they'd like a game.

    Chess?  Astaghfirullah!

    Sahih Muslim
    Book 028, Number 5612:

Buraida reported on the authority of his father that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: He who played chess is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine.

    Malik Muwatta
    Book 52, Number 52.2.7:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that when he found one of his family playing dice he beat him and destroyed the dice.

Yahya said that he heard Malik say, "There is no good in chess, and he disapproved of it." Yahya said, "I heard him disapprove of playing it and other worthless games. He recited this ayat, 'What is there after the truth except going the wrong way.' " (Sura l0 ayat 32).

Having said that, I'm ok at chess but any good player should be able to beat me.

I never understood why chess was banned? Is it because someday some muslim would have asked Mohammed to play? And then Mohammed would have lost? lol

Did he not want his followers to be smart?

Damn, I can't believe I ever quit playing it :( Not that I was ever any good at it haha Cheesy

From now on, more chess and more texas hold'em!

Btw, by this logic backgammon should be haram? But this game is extremely popular in the Mid-east?  Huh?

I never understood why chess was banned?

For the same reason laughing, drinking were frowned upon, and the same reason Islam grew to be the 2nd largest wordls religion within a short period of time.  Ibadaat and spreading Gods word is where Islams doctrine (or meme) is focused, not on enjoying yourself.  People forsake this enjoyment because of the empty promise of heaven and fear of hell, and for this reason the vehicle of Islam continued to gather momentum over its early stages.

Why is it that no ordinary Muslims seem to know about the prohibition on chess?

Where does the ordinary not-so-very-religious Muslim learn about hadiths? From parents or from hearsay?

Once he was in power, they needed him there, to make sense of their lives.

This site has a great collection:

    http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/search.html

Has also a search function, you can look up chess for example Smiley

Besides if you are around religious muslims they will let you know the right from wrong. Well, actually more often you will hear what's wrong. I've personally been told that chess is haram, or on the very least should be avoided. Never given a good reason for it though. Islames reason might be it.

both, hearsay & parents, as well as mullahs, family & friends.  Although only the good ones are remembered, they are not going to spread the silly ones - thats why no-one knows about the rest of them.  Thanks to the uncensorable internet, things are about to change...

I knew about the prohibition of chess before I actually read it in the hadith.  I think my Imam in mosque may have uttered it.  He definitely used to tell us that our trousers should be above our ankles.

That one has never made sense to me. Why wear trousers above ankles? I always thought it's because back then there was a lot of dirt and mud and you didn't want the end of your trousers to get dirty and drag that dirt into your home.

     Reply #15 - December 23, 2009, 11:11 PM

Well if your trousers are down around your ankles in public you're likely to get arrested.

That database is all anyone really needs to become an apostate. No need to go anywhere else at all. If anyone can finish reading those hadiths and still remain a Muslim by the end of it, he's either an idiot or pure evil.

    Improves your time management skills

After all the time you waste playing it, you need to work out how to finish off the things you were meant to be doing in the short time you have left
