    BTW, the resemblance to Joan of Arc is in the fact that she died for her beliefs. I'm no Catholic or saint. In fact I am a Muslim.  grin12

    Welcome Smiley Just out of curiosity what branch of Islam do you belong to? This question is in response to you stating that you share our views which usually tend to go against orthodox Islam.

    Yes, converted 9 years ago. I don't use the term "revert" because I don't accept the arrogance of stating that everyone is born a Muslim until they are lured off the path by the evil forces of other religions. I spent a good part of my life as a Christian (some of it observant and some less so) and to imply that being a Christian was some invalid period in my life, is an insult to my parents and myself. ANd btw, I did not convert in the process of marrying a Muslim. I chose it on my own.

    However, "how Muslim?" -- well let me just say "Muslim enough to believe in one God and Mohammed as his prophet, along with a number of others. But not so Muslim that I won't enjoy a glass of wine in my welcome party  lipsrsealed

    And truth be told, since living in the Arab world and seeing the changes of the last 5 years or so, I would say that everything is open for questioning at this point.  Wink

    When I converted I converted to Sunni Islam here in Qatar. In practice, I would be closer to Sufism without the twirling and mysticism grin12

    Maybe it is my idealism that has changed the most in response to what I have seen and experienced of the so-called Clash of Civilizations.

    Maybe it is related to living in a country where the people are supposedly being more empowered to take part in their governance and as they do that, one sees that they want something far more medieval than the Qatar of the present Emir.

    Maybe it is related to meeting and getting to know more and more Muslims, rather than the lovely selected few who first taught me about Islam as a religion of love and mercy.

    It's an awfully big question and one that I shall give thought to and try to organize those thoughts in a way that will do ustice to the subject.

    There's more then enough ex-convert-muslims on this forum who can relate to that.

    Try Saudi, you'll discover true Islam there before the persians and hindu's toned it down and added some sophistication.

    Sorry if I came across preachy, it was just a passing comment. If I was preaching I would have gobe straight for the jugular and bought up slavery, rape, wife-beating and hell fire.

    Honestly, one is much freer to try to understand Islam and implement it in their lives in the way that works for them far outside of the so-called Muslim world.

    No problem. I very, very rarely get upset about anyone taking issue with my faith and would never take issue with anyone's lack of faith.

    To give you an idea of how willing I am to consider controversial subjects I headed straight to the forum on Women in islam  grin12

    That's the thing. He did. Well in Saudi. For a year I think? He started losing faith, or felt suffocated and finally decided to leave. He also mentioned the very same thing, that it's easier to practice Islam in the West. Which honestly makes little sense, to me at least. Because religious Muslims in the West will say the opposite, that in fact it's easier to be a muslim in Muslim countries. Grass always greener argument.

    But I would say that these so-called "religious Muslims" in the West are really "political Muslims" who are simply spewing the party line that promotes the inevitable clash of civilizations.

    Nonono, he wrote about his experience in Saudi in one of his books. I think it was in "Losing my Religion".

    Actually I was referring to myself AND other religious muslims. I for a long time wanted to move to one of the Gulf countries and/or Malaysia, Indonesia. Don't think that will ever happen now  Roll Eyes
