Need help with setting up a site:(

Salam fellow doubters/atheists.

An idea popped up in my head two days ago, namely setting up an internetforum for muslim freethinkers.
My goal is to reach the youngsters and adults in Holland, who might not be an atheist, but atleast criticals in their views about Islam.
but my only problem is:
I have no freaking idea how to start up an internetforum and how much it costs.

Can the moderators somehow fill me in by giving some advices? does anyone of you have a website?

the easiest way would be to start a facebook group, you have a ready supply of potential members

get web hosting, i recommend strato

install forum software, i recommend SMF

Spread your site, try using youtube, facebook or digg to attract users

All in all, its pretty cheap. ( depending on the hosting pakage you choose ofcourse )

Facebook is one option for sure. If you want a forum there are stacks of hosts around. You wouldn't need massive bandwidth and storage unless the site really takes off, so hosting shouldn't cost much.

In general it is worth paying a bit and avoiding free hosting IMO. It is also worth reading a lot of reviews before deciding on a host. Be aware that any host that offers "unlimited" bandwidth and storage is lying to you and will shut your account down without warning if you happen to hit their private limits. This is common practice, and is engaged in by several of the popular big names in hosting.

It is better to go with a host who will give you clear cut limits on what they will allow in terms of bandwidth and storage and who will stick to those limits, with a clear policy for what they will do if you accidentally exceed them. The best is to have an arrangement to pay a slight premium rather than being shut down without warning.

As for software, I would definitely recommend SMF as the best of the free software and comparable with the best of the paid software IMO. Advice and support is easy to obtain.
