Atheists 'have more success at online dating'
Atheists have more success at online dating, according to a light-hearted statistical study of opening messages.

The advice is based on analysis of more than 500,000 "first contacts" sent by users of OkCupid, the leading US dating website.
It scanned the text of messages to see which terms increased ? and decreased ? the lonely heart's chance of earning a response.

Around 42 per cent of messages which included the word "atheist" achieved replies, significantly higher than the average response rate of 32 per cent.

References to "Christian", "Jewish" and "Muslim" boosted a message's success rate only marginally, while mentioning "god" in a first approach actually discouraged people from replying.

The analysis suggests online daters should avoid making personal compliments too early - "sexy" and "beautiful" sent response rates plummeting - and instead express an interest in their target's hobbies.

People who used the words "good taste" or "you mention" in their messages pushed their response rates close to 50 per cent.

Originality is also key to making a good first impression, according to the analysis. Dreary greetings such as "hi", "hey" and "hello" are far less successful than sparkier openings like "how's it going" and "what's up".

Men who use self-effacing terms such as "sorry" and "awkward" are also more likely to get responses, although the words had no magic effect when used by women.

The results of the analysis were published on OkTrends, the dating website's official blog, to help users get the most from the service. OkCupid claims that all the messages it scanned were anonymised, protecting the privacy of customers.

Shows how bad ex-muslims are around sex and dating. We should start a therapy group; "Sexually Dysfunctional Ex-Muslims".

    Let the healing begin.

In all seriousness, I wonder if it is an issue. An ex-Muslim going on a dating at the age of 30 has much less relationship experience than a (let's say) Western peer who started having a boyfriend/girlfriend at the same of 13. But there are many shades of gray in this issue since I think pulling is natural talent for some more than others.

Yes for some pulling is natural, they would probably do alright after a few weeks or months. But the rest of the guys and gals, the majority, need to practise. Loads.

Definitely. People learn from their mistakes. And if they haven't built up the years of mistakes, then those (who don't have natural flare) will lose out. I also think these (variety of) mistakes are pretty individual and so it is difficult to read off a dating magazines/books and learn from other people's mistakes (though I might be wrong on this).

Mistakes include: from picking an incompatible person, to incompatible expectations to incompatible long-term chemistry, etc. Like driving, these are practical learning, not just theory. Hence why just like one can't pick up a book on how to drive and pass a practical driving test, I don't think picking up a book on dating is as valuable as the practice of it. Again, I might be wrong on this.

Practise makes perfect. Theory well that only makes you well-read. Go out there my fellow murtads, go out there and date!
