  • Ahmadinejad regime collapse?
     OP - December 29, 2009, 12:26 PM

Dont know about you guys but Im getting the feeling this is the beginning of the end for Ahamdinejad's regime.

Apparently even the Qods division of the revolutionary guards has distanced itself from the state.

What says the COEM's collective wisdom?

"By the One in Whose Hand my soul is, were you not to commit sins, Allah would replace you with a people who would commit sins and then seek forgiveness from Allah; and Allah would forgive them." [Saheeh Muslim]

Thats a major difficulty - I rely on my Iranian friends for most of my information (cant read Farsi) and for the first time there seems to be a consensus among all of them that change is coming.

I think the protests are secondary to the withdrawal of support from some members of the clergy and revolutionary guards.

But even so, does that mean Iran will be secular? Will it honestly be a democracy? What if another clergy takes power? If the people overthrow this regime?

Exactly, i think so too - change sounds like its on the horizon, but what for?  are we just gonna end up with a variant of the same thing?

It wont be Norway but it'll develop its own system and thats fine.

The Iranian people just don't want the oppressiveness of the current regime - anything more liberal, less repressive, will be better for them, then they can evolve from there - any such society will also want to have better relations with other nations - just hope for the best, the Iranian people are brave.

Hopefully they will learn from their mistake and they will not simply oust this regime and not think to much about what they are going to replace it with.  They made that mistake when they ousted the Shah and look where that got them...

It was less the Persian people making that mistake than the mullahs and Khomeini killing, torturing and imprisoning anyone who stood in their way once the popular uprising against the Shah ran its course -- all the socialists, the trade uniuonists, the students, the leftists, all of civil society.

The mullahs didn't win any revolution. They just made the most corpses.

I read this wonderful turn of phrase.....any regime that eats its own people will be eaten itself by the children and grandchildren of those it ate to gain power.

The mullahs are cannibals - they fed on the flesh of the Iranian people to gain power. No tyrant lasts forever.

The Ayatollah had wide support actually.  The others did not expect a theocracy.

And yet - Khomeini could only get the power he got through a reign of terror.

Khomeini's reign of terror began when he neutered all those who had a stake in Iranian society and had participated in the anti-shah uprising from secular backgrounds. The reign of terror gained him his absolute power, consolidated his power, and continued his power.

Precisely, you are talking about how he maintained the power he achieved and how he killed competition.

I'm talking about how those secularists who participated in the uprising were kept out of power from the beginning as well as how he consolidate his power.

He initially worked with them, then when he did not need them (hence had enough power), he disposed of them
