    Why is that the slightest bit confusing, Shan? Are you confused by the fact that gorillas and chimpanzees are apes but chimpanzees are not gorillas? It is exactly the same principle. Humans and chimps are apes but chimps are not humans. Why is this hard to digest?

    And there are heaps of fossils of transitionals. All fossils are transitional, except in the case of extinct species for the last ones in the species just before it became extinct.

    I think I understand what Shan is trying to ask. That whether that common ancestor shared some human characteristics and some ape characteristics, the answer to which is yes. I've had the same question before. From what I've learnt, those fossils which are linked as human direct ancestors show evidence of tool usage, and they had other human features like being able to bring their thumb and pinky fingers together (only humans have this characteristic, other apes aren't able to do this, just like you can't bring your big toe and pinky toe close).

    In the animal kingdom, for classification purposes we are called apes, even by theist biologists.  Its stands to good reason, afterall would you prefer to put us in the bird category, or the insect one or another one of your choosing?

    I think your confusion lies in that we regularly call species from the monkey kingdom as apes.  Its just a word used to group a set of living species into groups.. like boy & girl, or canadian or american..

    Uhhh, you're confusing language here. You're separating "apes" and "humans". Apes are not some separated entitity, apes are not a specific species, they are a primate family. So saying "apes are not humans" is like saying "fruits are not apples"... makes little sense since fruits are not a thing, but a broad group - and apples belong to the food group known as 'fruits'. Likewise Apes are a family group and humans, chimps and gorillas belong to that group.

    I don't think your questions are silly Shaeequa. Most of us have all started at the same place i.e. we were creationists and thought god mystically and magically created everything.

    There are a lot of misunderstandings about evolution in the religious world and although it is a fascinating subject, some things can take a bit to get your mind around.

    It's good to hear questions like yours and also to read answers from others because other people, like myself, relearn the subject from a different perspective etc.

    I will keep Iblis' fruit analogy in mind for future use as it makes a lot of sense Smiley

    Thank you, Cocopop. The only thing is I know how my questions are because I grew up with evolution and am rather sad I still know how to think like an evolutionist. Osmanthus answered my question the way I would have answered it....and I had to admit to myself that I really was not confused at all by Iblis's answer.

    I wish I would have grown up knowing there is creation science.

    I know. I just didn't know any growing up. I didn't know there was even such a thing. The ones I know now do not obsess about it and the do not have camps.

    Here the priests themselves would laugh at you if you said that you believed that Adam and Eve was a true story...  This 'creationism' thing used to be limited to the US, but now it seems to spreading.

    But how do they reconcile that fact with the scientific inaccuracies in the Bible? The attitude that the Bible is the literal word of god, when did this change into the Bible being mostly a metaphorical book? Symbolic etc.

    When I was at school we were never taught that the bible was the literal word of god.  We used to be taught that it is a collection of books, written over a very long period of time (centuries)  that were supposedly divinely inspired but they were written by people...

    Because people like Galileo would have undermined the Roman Catholic church's power and role in society by presenting a different view.  Now obviously the Church reformed itself and its way of teaching stuff..  It had to..

    Mm exactly. Maybe one day Islam will have to go through the same thing? I doubt it though, there hasn't been a single Muslim scholar/scientist of Galileo's stature since... Islam first came about? Plus there isn't a major institution in Islam like the Catholic Church, there are way too many sects and madthabs.

    Ofcourse the priests would laugh at us. If priests did not laugh at us, we would have to ask what we are doing wrong.

    Just some thaughts after reading the last few posts.

    Its true... the Catholic church officialy accepted evolution and the big bang theory.
    Its funny to have the KC on my side when it comes to the evolution theory Grin

    But like everytime we make some progress, some numnuts want it like it was before, because it was better. *rolleyes*

    So you actually are saying your question was not because you wanted to know the answer but because you wanted to compare your answer to our answer. And that you are rather depressed because you know about evolution and wish you learned creation science(or pseudoscience as I and most scientists see it) instead.
