  • Tips on getting into university
     OP - January 08, 2010, 11:28 AM

I am thinking of going back to university starting in first term 2011, I've decided to do a degree in psychology and criminology and maybe work in the police/probation after completing my degree. Or carrying on and doing an MA.

However, I just realized I have a GCSE garde C in mathematics, I suck at maths. Rest are A's and B's. The question is would it make more sense doing a foundation year as a mature student to brush up on my education, getting some UCAS points and getting in a half decent university as a mature student and then doing my degree. Or getting into a below-par university with my current education level as a mature student.

And also shall I start looking now for a placement in a university for 2011 or shall I wait till next year?

By the way this will be full-time I will be 27/28 years old doing a degree as a mature student. I really want to do this, but I am also really thinking about getting an MA and doing some research on cognitive sciences, but if I find it too hard I want to fall back on something like criminology.

I am willing to travel and live up to 25 miles outside of Leeds. I also don't want to live at home even if I can walk to university from home I will be ideally also looking for apartment or university lodging.

The thing is if you stay at home you get too comfortable with too many distractions.

Needs some serious tips, and I want to hear from uni students and how fun is it?

First of all, for that course, do not listen to other forum users opinions of freedom of speech here  Cheesy

Best thing to do is to email the university you want to apply to and ask the department directly about how to get onto the course, its requirements, and what more you may need to study. According to my past lecturers, aspiring students that e-mail the department directly impress them a lot more as it shows that yo have more interest in the course as opposed to the normal school leaver.

As a mature student, you may not need to meet all the entry requirements, but if you dont have A-Level standard qualifications, then you would need to look into a foundation course. Ask the university when you email them and they should give you info on this.

We keep hearing about how Jack Straw or the French government have mentioned the veil and our doing so puts us in the same boat as them. How so? I want a ban on the burka, neqab and child veiling.

The thing is my maths is so crap that I have to find a course which hardly touches on mathematics, but I will have to learn maths if I want to do a masters that is pretty much a given. But I don't want to jump into something I can't handle. Just thinking of maths scares me, I can't even do simple adding up. If I was strong in mathematics I would have done and MA in physics.

GCSE C Grade maths is fine. I had a B and failed my A-Level maths and somehow became completely rubbish at it. I managed with Biology, I doubt this course would have any more maths.

That course you have picked definately wont have much maths in it. Statistics may be required in the final year, but this is easy to do on Excel without needing to understand any of the maths.

Nor listen to ex-hindus, who would have the government wiping our asses too.  Afro

Not that I would advise him to, but if this course is studied in the UK, it will hardly differ at all from my opinions on such topics, and will disagree highly with the American opinions  Afro

I know for a mature student it's easy to get into university but that is in a really shit university, I want to go to a decent university and I know a C in maths looks pretty bad when you are talking about maybe doing an MA in your interview, they'll just think you are not being serious/realistic and would rather give the placement to someone else. Like some under-achieving black kid, so they can tick some boxes off. Also the university I want to go to I want it to be predominately white and associated with the middle-class. I'd hate to study with pill-heads, and cannabis heads - cocaine heads are fine.

A C in Maths is not bad at all, and is all that you need in that subject to study at Manchester Met, which is a low requirement university. I applied there as my first choice, but went with my other choice.

If the rest of your grades are A's and B's, you souldnt worry about your maths. I had 6 B's and 2 C's, with a C in english and B in maths, and at A levels only got CCD grades. I passed my interview at Manchester Met with no problems, and had an unconditional offer from Northampton with guaranteed first year accomodation, so I went there.

I enjoyed living on campus very much, and the university I went to was surprisingy great for a low requirement one.

But you have to comfortable with people being around you all the time if you live on campus. You will never get any peace in student accomodation, but the library will always be nearby Smiley

Well, University of Northampton was mostly white people, I only came to know 3 other Indian people while I were there and to my amazement, they were incredibly modern and westernised compared to the trash you would find in Bradford. But, just about all of the white people smoked weed, which I learnt to tolerate while I were there. A few years later and smoking indoors in shared accomodation was banned, and I were completely like WTF, why couldnt I have gone to university later lol.

I freaking love the smoking in public ban in the UK, and I dont give a shit what anyone else thinks.

Here is a music video by people from the city where I were born and live in, please let me know what you think:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lVu77Vxqg8

Trust me if I could, I would ***** Oh wait, I cant finish that sentance anymore, but it involves a word begining in N and ending in Uke.

Yes, I am far far far far better than these average chavs thank you. This is all that I were ever surrounded by while growing up.

University was a million times better, I couldnt have cared less about the weed smoking when I were actually around decent people for the first time in my life. Trust me it had nothing to do with their skin colour or race at all, and I dont see how you can complain about racism at all when you just used that ridiculous bounty bar comment.

Should I have used coconut?  maybe uncle tom?

Talk about self race hate, only wanting a white uni, when you are actually brown.  This is Tut I;m talking about, unless of course you also hold his views, that the colour of your skin is what matters?

I personally don't think you are better than those thugs are, you are different, but not better.  Infact one could argue that you are worse since you want to nuke so many people for belief, and you have been to uni, whereas these youths are on the poverty side and never had even the dream that they were worthy of uni.

You are educated and yet you display traits as bad as they do, what was the education for?  So that you could stand there, full of hateful and repugnant views, yet hold a degree to prove you are somehow better?  Cheesy

I never said that those people are thugs. I absolutely hate the way they talk, dress and behave.

Two seperate quotes from two of my female friends at university, who were both very intelligent and incredibly wonderful people to be with:

'Keep Britain tidy, kill a chav today'.

'People who drink and drive should be killed. I dont care if it sounds harsh, but I would rather that they die rather than an innocent pedestrian while they are driving'.

And so what? I couldnt care less what other people think, they can have whatever beliefs they want. In case you didnt realise, the main thing that education teaches is freedom of opinion. Holding an unpopular opinion doesnt make a person bad, or any worse than someone else.

I didnt pick my university based on race, but I would have never ever have attended Bradford university no matter what because the Asian majority there are incredibly backward and anti western people. Usually the result of the strict and backward asian parents raising their kids to be the same as them, and those kids then going to that university.

Theres also a video on the mosques that I am looking for, but I cant find it just yet.

It has absolutely nothing to do with skin colour. They are not living their lives as modern british people, their culture clashes terribly with mine.

Or you are just boring with no sense of humor. They were great people to be and speak with, again, simply holding unpopular opinions says nothing about a persons personality. Being able to tolerate people with different opinions and to judge them on their personality alone is what makes a person more or less likeable to me.

Another part of being at university is actually being able to debate different opinions without sudenly liking people less for speaking their mind. This is obviously a quality which you and many other people on this forum lack.

If you expect everyone else to agree with you and your opinions in order to like them, then you have a very narrow mind.

I don't know if I had to apply for a student loan or not, but I've applied for one in any case through the government website for the year 2011. Although I might change the university I will be studying at, will that be a problem in the future?

You can get a student loan regardless of which university you study at, you usually wont recieve any loan untill after you start anyway.

I dont know what you are talking about, most of my friends were christians, and I enjoyed going to church and out to dinners with them.

We had many religion vs atheism debates, and never thought any better or worse of each other. It was actually very enjoyable to me to be with them as well.

I have never met such wonderful people anywhere outside of university. Ok then, I must be a snob, but I prefer it thank you.

I judge people purely on their personality, I dont care about any of these things that you assume. And I hope you know what they say about people who assume things.

I have simply never met a muslim or a hindu that was tolerant of me, nor one whose personality I liked.

Like I said before I have more in common with upper-middle class white folks then I do with working class chav Asians! these white, Asian and black youth should be sterilized, they've had everything handed to them on a silver platter, but yet refuse to be a benefit to the society, and getting themselves out of living on the estate. The last thing I would want is to be around "gangsta" pakis or wankster whites. A man is known by the company he keeps. This is why I would never go to Bradford Uni, I would much rather go to Leeds university even thought it is slightly dominated by white racists. In all my years of going to bars, I've only had one incident of racism, and that was too from some working class white guy who came into a expensive bar in Huddersfield to play pool and have one drink. All the rest of these working class shit-bags hang around in weatherpersons.

I do not want to be associated with non of this, I come from a very different family background, my family have traditionally been associated with aristocracy in Punjab.

The point is I don't hate working class works or lower-class people, I hate how they are not based on skin-colour but on mentality.

Honestly I would get a much more meaningful conversation from middle-class white person then I would from a working class white person, what the hell is a working class white person going to talk about? FOOTBALL. Fuck that shit.

I am not a coconut either colour does not matter one bit, but attitude does.
