     OP - January 11, 2010, 07:17 PM

    hi all

About two weeks ago and after pulling an old night'r I asked my parents who are just eating break fast with my little sister if they think they have anything to do with my religion?

my father was very laid out and said keep it to yourself and I don't need to know, on the other hand my mother started interrogating me if i am going to convert to Christianity, I told her "no, but what if i was going to", all she said is"I'll pull a knife and slaughter you with my hands if so, bla bla bla bla"

anyways a few days after that I thought I am going to push the envelop a little bit more, so while we are watching tv (horoscope predictions for 2010 if anyone is interested in knowing, my father is possessed with such things) I started attacking yet another corner of faith for him "horoscopes".

anyhow after been asked to come over to watch the show with some of my father friends and while in the car i said:"dad how would you feel if i told you that my religious beliefs has changed?", he said:"please don't tell me that you are not thinking of becoming a sheekh"

i said:"why would you say that?"
he said:"you are a Scorpio, you are either a man of violent religious faith or a violent atheist thinking or doing both at the same time"
    i said:"well its the second"
    he said:"what?"
    i said:"an atheist, i don't believe in a god"
he said:"thank god i thought you are becoming a shekh"
    i said:"aren't you upset?"
he said:"no not at all, all thinking men are atheists Cheesy"

and that smile on his face looked so strange

    i said:"are you an atheist"
    he said:"yes, i have a brain don't you think"
i said:"are their more in the family that are atheists?"
he said: "yes, your cousin samer, and their is amro, also saleh, and the two guys we are going to meet right now are also atheists"

i looked weird as those people i worked and socialized with every day without sensing for a minute that they were atheists, and they are among the best people that I've dealt with in my life and the most successful and intelligent also

i said:"why the fuck did you send me to an Islamic school for then??"
he said:"it's a good school, your mother insisted to have at least one boy sent to an islamic school, and i thought you are smart on your own to figure it out"

he thought that religion had "human made" all over it,
and that god is "nothing but a human need and invention"

tbh I would never do what your dad did. It was too much of a risk, given that 99.9% of people raised muslim, remain muslim.

my dad never made me read or do anything...
the only thing he made me to read is the entire kids library next to our house he used to offer me a $ for every 50 pages of reading(no religious staff was on my reading list)

i was 8 when i had read every book I thought worth reading in the kids library and moved along for the general library and that was in magnitude of hundreds of books...of course he didn't pay like he said(he paid some 10 $ and i continued cause i liked it)

at the age of 13 when i was sent to the religious school it was more like a 70% chance that i am going to find out what is going on

There are millions of well read muslims who are still muslim, you should know that -  the 70% figure is highly innacurate.  Most of us here only know a few apostates, including ones that we think could be closet apostates.

I suspect your dad was not bothered if you followed Islam or not, he left that decision to you.

Although I still find it hard to understand how people can keep such matters close to their chest, particularly within family, as your belief system takes you to the core of who you are as a being.  Same reason you eventually wanted to tell your parents.
