This guy is known as "Dimitri the Lover" a "pick up artist" and member of the "seduction community", who gives seminars on how to pick up women. For those of you unfamiliar with what that's all about-- it's basically a cultish group of creeps who discuss how to manipulate women into having sex with them by trying to be an "alpha male". In other words, losers who can't get laid by just being themselves so they adopt an artificial personality and approach picking up women as some kind of project, rather than just having fun. I became familiar with this nasty little subculture when a childhood friend who was an aspiring pornographer got into it.

Anyhow, these are some voicemails he left some girl he met in a bar. Fuckin hilarious stuff. I mean, it's creepy, but it's really funny too.

Ugggh, I know quite a few guys who are into this PUA stuff. It's pretty pathetic and sad. They tend to be types that never had any game to begin with and think some sly lines and tricks are going to change the fact that they just need to loosen up a bit and just say "hey".

Yup. Thank God I only know one person into this. Most of the guys I know who are good at picking up lots of women just use the tried and true method of (1) being confident, (2) asking a lot of girls, (3) not getting upset when they get shot down. I think these creepy manipulation techniques and creation of a false persona are just crutches for guys to be able to do those three things.

They're the geeky kids reading Ayn Rand wishing they were the alpha males who never grew out of that phase (I had that phase around 16 and by 19 I was completely over it-- guys in their 20s or 30s still in that phase are creepy as fuck). I think there's a class/culture thing going on too. I strongly suspect that most of these guys are white dudes from the upper middle-income petit-bourgeois class, their culture and surroundings leading to some level of emasculation that they are overcompensating for. But that's just a weak-ass theory I just pulled outta my ass. I'd really like to know what Camille Paglia thinks of these guys. Hmmm...maybe she's already written on it. Time to consult the google.

lol! Dude... thats actually spot on because I know so many of these types of guys because I'm from a upper middle class background myself. All these guys, mostly white though not always, I grew up with in high school are like that. And, not gonna lie, I used to think there was something to the PUA thing.. luckily I always felt it rather artificial and creepy, I'm not good at acting myself. You rarely see any working class kids stressin over shit like this. But that emasculation bit might have something of value to it. I myself have been hella into the "bodybuilding" thing myself since uni and still am and I would be lying if I said that overcompensating for being a nerd in engineering had nothing to do with it.

Well, I think there is something to the PUA thing. If it didn't work at all, there wouldn't be so many people doing it, but like I said I think it's mostly a creepy, artificial, and manipulative way of doing what a lot of natural "pickup artists" do, which is be confident, charming, and just play a numbers game. That stuff does work. Not gonna work on every woman, but that's part of the numbers game and just asking out as many women as you can. It's just when PUA types do it it's fuckin creepy, pathetic and consciously misogynistic. The whole subculture they've developed is just plain ole weird and sexist. They got their own lingo, acronyms, cultural norms. It's fucked up shit.

Anyhow, I couldn't find anything by Camille Paglia on this subculture by using google, so I sent her an e-mail. Hopefully she responds.

Hey, the working-class has its geeks and nerds too. I know, I was one of them in grade school until I started socially developing better. One of my best friends is a comic-book geek who is a working-class Salvadoran immigrant. It's just that in a working-class environment I think you have a different culture, so it's a little easier for people to adjust because the working-class doesn't tend to do "passive-aggressive" much, so even as a geek/nerd, you learn to be assertive and toughen up as a function of necessity. Plus worrying about material concerns tends to reduce neurosis.

This is a good paper on it - what you suspect is not that far off, really.

I think the whole PUA thing makes some things explicit about some of today's very worst tendencies, distilled into anti-feminist propaganda.

It's gonna go horribly wrong at some point, if it hasn't already somewhere.

I actually listened to the whole thing and I truly cannot believe that this guy is for real. You sure this is not some kind of hoax or a PR stunt? Besides there seem to be a strong homoerotic theme permeating this whole "Seduction Community". Maybe it's just a bunch of guys that are attracted to one another but are too afraid to face the reality of their own sexuality?
