Nadeem F. Paracha is just so damn amazing! and he has always had agnostic/atheist views about religion.

I am pretty sure he's agnostic, I have read many of his articles.  Wouldn't be surprised if he gets a fatwa issued on his head.

If you're so devout, how come I am not dead?

I hate the way he people are meant to be embarrassed by saying they are irreligious.. I dont even bother, I usually go the full hog and tell them i think Islam is man-made.

I know , but Atheist.pk managed it,  and I would have done the same thing too..

Managed like 30% of it to be honest, and that too only with my own family some close members of my extended family - much to their surprise, denial, shock, concern, anger, sadness, arrogance (you name it) etc etc, They are tolerating it as merely a 'phase' in my life.  Roll Eyes

But I am very tight lipped about it for the rest of the people here - I dont really have much friends where I live to be honest. One fellow I am friendly with is a typical show-off party-lover pseudo-religious fellow. But I prefer if he yaps about girls, partying, and telling me duas to recite whilst jogging... its better than hate.  Roll Eyes

That said, I understand taraC's concerns given she is a girl in a religious family. No telling what her parents/siblings will do if they hear it. Better to avoid.

Depends what background they are from. Nadeem Farooq Paracha has always had leftist-marxist views since his youth days and has always been in the forefront of cultural and political satire for years. Him and Fasi Zaka are just brilliant.

Take a look at his works: http://www.chowk.com/writers/1054

Islame, it's hard to openly call Islam man-made here because that would be social suicide. No one wants to befriend a self declared murtid. Some of my friends know but even they think I am really immature, crazy and going through a rebellious "phase".  If I were living in a non-muslim country, I wouldn't care so much since I wouldn't be isolated. Out of all the people I know, I just know one ex-muslim in real life. No one else can even take slightest criticsm on Islam without getting deeply offended even if they are the most "enlightened moderated" pseudo molvi types who think its okay to drink and party but still be muslim

I can empathise with that, my family & extended family are the same.  You are actually lucky, you know one more ex-muslims that I did when i apostated.  How did you meet them?  Did you have a mutual effect on each other? I wouldnt wory about the religious lot, they are no loss as I doubt you would want to be friends with them anyway.

If deists, irrelegious, socialists, communists, agnostics, atheists, universalists group together in pak, I am sure that you will have a far more powerful lobby both socially, culturally & politically.

He's an acquintance, not even a friend really. Randomly met at a party when we were both drunk and shared our apostacy stories Smiley  But yeah, he's the only ex-muslim I know in real life.

You were drunk in Pakistan?  I understand atheism is prevalent but its a shame people cant be open about it.  The mullahs have created such a climate of fear that no-one dare speak out.  I bet loads more would come through the woodwork if you could be open.

I have a rather unorthodox slightly-secular uncle, but even he doesnt rate lack of belief in a god (i.e. Allah) as something different. He is a cool open man though. I like him regardless.

I don't know about other cities but it's really easy to get in karachi. If a cop catches me, I'll just bribe him with a couple of hundred rupees at most.
Well karachi is a diverse city with a huge population so we have fanatic crazies too and also some very liberal folks. Out of the rich liberal folks, I would say atleast 50% of the guys must have tasted alcohol or smoked up at some point but definitly VERY FEW girls since they don't get permission to stay out late and go to parties.

LOL, well that depends. A lot of my male cousins (all younger than me) whom I am frank have lived in Karachi their entire lives and will ALWAYS complain that finding a hot girl is near to impossible in Karachi (given the size), but in Lahore every other girl is a fit bachi and cant help but stare whenever they have visited that place.

Plus, I too am regular visitor in Lahore and even lived there for 2 years...and I will confirm that. Unfortunately I have always been a shy bugger my entire life (still am to an extent) and avoided girls  Cry  Cheesy
