    The name change:

    Quote
The tower was to have been known as the Burj Dubai, but was renamed in honor of Sheikh Khalifa, ruler of the neighboring city-state of Abu Dhabi. He is credited with having bailed out Dubai after the collapse of state-owned development enterprise Dubai World.

Sure, world's tallest building. The total budget US$1.5 billion, very ?impressive?. I have to say I am a bit disappointed. I know they are trying to build a financial sector for world companies to move their head quarters too. And they are trying to show the world a marvellous feat of architecture. But none of these points really impress me I still ask, this is what they spent the money on?

They could have started a Silicone Valley of the Middle-East with the money spent on this building. Along with the US$20 billion they spent on Downtown Dubai.

Or used the money for Space Exploration.

    Or for medical labs.

I'm sure there are some investments for the above mentioned propositions but this is what they are famous for and want to be famous for. Such ignorant mentality. My tower is bigger than your tower. My dick bigger than your dick. They even have this on their website, comparing the tallest structures in the world to the Burj.

And to have built this tower in a financial melt down is even more incredulous.

How will this benefit mankind in the long run? Even after having built this, what will this do for the greater good? Will they invent cures for disease with this? Such a waste of money. The pyramids of the modern-age. It is awe-inspiring to look at it, is a marvellous feat in itself. But still... this is what they spent their money on?

If you criticize the tower in front of gulf arabs they?ll get mad, and start criticizing the US and Europe. As if that is a sensical argument. I have to say though, back when I was muslim I was impressed, it was out of solidarity, they think muslims are only desert dwellers. But after closer reflection, and the state of the workers in that country I have to say it was just that, a feeling of mutual pride.

Now I think this the equivalent of diamond studded rims in the world of hip hop. Mos Definitely not impressed. And anybody that goes "lol what a moron, he compared a sky scraper, the tallest one in the world to some damn hubcaps!" is totally missing the point. This structure is still the blinged out rims in the world of architecture, and in the world of achievements.

Well, non muslims waste billions of dollars on pointless showy things too, to have the greatest architectural structure, the statue of liberty, the eiffel tower, hardly needed and yet hardly cheap.

I agree with you, money could have been invested in a much better way, but men will be men, flashier cars, bigger buildings, the compensation factor, it's global.

My objection is that it was built during a financial meltdown, and when there were more pressing priorities ahead, otherwise I do not see why such buildings should not be built.  They are a testament to human engineering and ingenuity and they enrich the place they are in.

BlackDog, I mentioned in another thread about my mixed feelings about Dubai. On the one hand, it has been built off the backs of workers from Asia who have been exploited mercilessly, and continue to be exploited mercilessly, many of whom are little more than indentured labourers, just one small step up from slaves. It is tacky, much of it is ugly, we all know what the bad things about Dubai are.

However, I am curious about how the simple fact of a small city-state with such a concentration of kuffar-dom, nightclubs, alcohol, sunbathing women in bikinis, music concerts, multi racialism and even multi faith-ism (all those Christians, Hindus and Sikhs), and in general hedonism, has embedded itself in the heartlands of the Gulf Arab world, just a few short hours drive from Mecca.

Something tells me that there is something profoundly subversive about Dubai that hasn't worked itself out yet.
