Went to an Ottaviani live show last weekend. The crowd went wild when he played this track.

Don't. I've lived in Montreal and Toronto, and they both have huge trance/EDM scenes.

That's not my subjective opinion but I'll permit for EDM heads to educate me on the finer history of dance music.

I don't really know what you're trying to say, but if you think that trance is dead, you're just out of touch with the culture.

I'm saying that todays trance has absolutely nothing to do with the original trance techno sound of Frankfurt, Berlin and London, not even referentially. Whatever, I was being satirical and wanted to segue into a few classic trance favs from the era. And if I'm out of touch with corporatism, then I'm thankful, TBH.

I think you'll find that a lot of tranceheads have a sense of nostalgia towards the Golden Age of Trance, even those who didn't live through it, and the whole issue of commercial vs. independent and artistic music is a debate that has been going on in the scene for years now. But to equate everything produced today with corporatism is simply not true. There are still a lot of independent producers and DJs who do what they do for the love of the music and not for the money.

While it may be true that formulaic music suffers from diminishing returns and diminishing quality, and is ever more derivative, but the actual experience of a club is still as amazing as it ever was, especially so for those who have just begun their raver journey. In its right context, the music is still just as good (assuming a competent DJ). We have to divorce the music from its context in order for criticism to have legs.

I mean, come on. Some of the shit I was raving to when I was a kid wasn't that good either. But nobody cared at the time. And after a few jagerbombs, I'll still dance to fucking anything.

Whilst the music may not be corporatist, The culture is unequivocally corporatist. Don't get me wrong i have no problem with todays trance - it's the dubstep scene which really irks me as i was listening to DMZ et al on pirate radio. But if you tell me that you've been to a trance club that stinks of shit and has slime covered surfaces then I may be inclined to believe you. I live in Europe and growing up, the so-called golden age of trance was ubiquitous, so much so that you'd have ferry corsten remixes in the UK top 40, ibiza adds on TV with equally unappealing glamour babes, and trance comps being sold by the dozen in Tesco, of all places. This was very much dissimilar to the golden epoch of UK hardcore as most of these guys were affiliated with universal/positiva or some such crap, as opposed to you know, Sons Of a Loop Da Loop era scoring a chart hit whilst still being signed to suburban bass. I don't understand your argument, if I'm being honest.

I have been to warehouse raves where the venue was announced the day before the event and the toilets were covered with piss and shit and no one gave a crap because everyone was on molly and everything was okay.

Granted, there's been a lot of commercialization of the scene, but underground raves still exist, if that's the stuff you're looking for.

Besides, even some of the club raves are really fucking good. Not all clubs play commercial crap. I was really into the trance scene when I was living in Montreal, and tranceheads in Montreal really love their pure, unadultered trance—no commercial, electro crap—and there was always a great, positive, community, PLUR vibe. And that's all that really matters.

Don't feel sorry for me. The trance scene changed my life and I will take my memories of it with me to the grave.

What's the point of raving when all the elements are reappropriated and the working class/minority aesthetic is stripped? Genuine question here. I mean, even at deeper than thou house nights, shit still sounds muddy,  raw and disco-y. I think that's my biggest problem with trance/EDM, there's no tension, no edge, nothing radical at stake. It makes no difference if that stuff is played in a dilapidated warehouse or a sexy club whereas with certin forms of house, techno, UK soundsystem music, it really does.

Anyway, heard this last night at a jungle night, relentless ruff man bass ting.

Why would you want shitty quality sound when music can be blasted through a better sound system with a better atmosphere and lighting, etc? It's like you're rejecting technological development just for the sake of nostalgia, when technology provides a much better experience.

The culture was not reappropriated; it developed.

Actually, electronic dance music developed from the abuse of old technologies. That's what makes it so special, squeezing every single possibility from a device, production trait and computer program before moving on.

No offence mate but you probably wouldn't be able to tell if a track being played in a club was made using analogue or digital equipment so you're ill-advised to make the sound quality comparison. Correct me if I am wrong.

Also, if we rule out lo-fi, you can kiss goodbye to dub reggae, HipHop, early house and techno, hardcore, jungle, and certain subgenres of indie rock. Sometimes to progress you've got to regress.
  • Raving Kafirs !! (trance, house, electro, techno)

I have been to venues with great sound systems and others with crappy sound systems, and I can tell the difference pretty damn well. It doesn't matter whether or not I can tell something is digital or analogue. Never mentioned anything about that.

And I am talking from the perspective of trance music, not dub or jungle, etc., because trance is what I am into. And trance music is all about creating as pure a sound as possible; it's not about keeping things "raw". Lo-fi has its place in music, but so does hi-fi.

But I think you're putting too much emphasis on rawness. Hip-hop and house, dnb, etc. today are heavily digitized. And they are pretty damn fucking good. Musicians can be just as creative with digital tools as they can with analogue ones, and maybe even more so. The problem is that it's very easy with digital software to be lazy and take the easy route by producing generic, formulaic crap. But that's not a problem inherent in the digitization of music.

I sometimes wish they never produced if you know where I'm coming from. After they stopped producing there was a saturation of pointless rollers with absolutely no attitude at all. Akin to Shackleton and the Bristol contingent in Dubstep, everything else attempting to exude darkness proceeding those productions pales for the most part. Early techstep on no-u-turn and Prototype was really fucking good as well with those reese basslines being run through guitar pedals.

Had the distinct pleasure of seeing Phil DJ at a night in London a few months back and he's still got it; apocalypse noir for the head is probably the only manner in which I can convey it. SD really managed to tap into something transcendental.
