    Well I'm talking about interpreting Avatar (and by implication, "environmentalism") as having/being a "suicidal fantasy" is really over-simplifying things and ignoring/denying the reality of humanity's impact on the planet.

    A lot of the movie dialogue was sorta cheesy, cliched etc. I think there's a part where they are trying to drop out bombs onto the planet or something, and I spotted the bombs were labelled EXPLOSIVE .. noooo really?  Roll Eyes

    By the way, I have not seen Avatar yet (I think I'm one of 3 people in the western hemisphere who hasn't), but I've seen Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves, and while I'm sure Avatar is in a league of its own in terms of graphics and visual effects, I can understand the criticism that it's the same story as those films. However, so what? Every year we see the same old rehashed stupid romantic comedies, rehashed big explosive action flicks etc etc etc. All stories have been told before, the art is in telling old stories in new ways and if Avatar has raised some people's consciousness about some real world issues, then I say good!

    I was looking forward to watching this movie alot, the special effects were excellent, and I enjoyed it as a way to spend two and a half hours immersed in an imaginary world, but when I think about the movie afterwards, I think its a really stupid film.

    That's not nessecarily a criticism, because you can enjoy stupid films. For example, I enjoyed Transformers 2, and that is a really, really, stupid movie. However the difference between that and Avatar is I realised Transformers was stupid whilst I was watching it, with Avatar, I didn't really see it was stupid, until afterwards. It has some components that make you forget its stupidity whilst watching it.

    Enjoyable film though  Afro

    I see. Stupid yeah, I agree. But maybe it was ment to emphasize how evil/stupid the humans are. Imho Avatar was one of the most anti-American movies I have ever seen.

    Okay. Thanks for the clarification. I wanted to address this common criticism that seems to sometimes border on denialism. But I understand now that you were not implying that.

    If you watch James Cameron's earlier movie, Aliens (which is an utterly amazing, brilliant film), you'll notice Avatar is an inversion of it.

    In Aliens, the marines are heroes, who rescue humans from a violent, murderous race of extra-terrestrials.

    In Avatar, the marines are villains, who seek to destroy a peaceful race of extra-terrestrials from humans violent, exploitative actions.

    Yes it was very anti-american on the surface, but I suppose it merely shows human behaviour by the oppressor and the oppressed.
    Power hungry humans will go to any length to justify their operations. Despite a bleak outcome, powerless humans will still be willing to go all out and fight and die for their land and way of life. I like to view it as life affirming.

    There is a fundamental difference though.

    Aliens aren't evil, they don't kill for pleasure or power. It's what they are.

    Yeah but the narrative and components of the story are inverted, the morality is whatever it is. The aliens in Aliens are scary.

    I watched it in 3D, and if I am not mistaken it was the first 3D movie I have seen in a large screen. It was stunning, and they had many creative ideas about it. The plot/story was meh, and so cliche.

    Though I must say, the hype gave me big expectations, and I might have enjoyed it more had it been perceived like other movies.

    Snobbery has got nothing to do with it. For example I eagerly anticipated and quite enjoyed the first Transformers.

    But some movies are just painful to watch.

    Have you seen Twilight: New Moon? I was forced into watching it in a cinema and after watching it for about 10 minutes I tried to cut my jugular with a soft drink cup. It's that bad!

    Out of curiosity, are you referring to environmentalism in its entirety or specifically issues regarding AGW/Climate change?

    I enjoyed seeing the pyramids destroyed in a scrap between gigantic robots, I also enjoyed, as in I laughed out loud, when Shia Leboef goes to Robot heaven and is anointed by the Transformer Gods - it was fuggin hilarious and garbage-enjoyable to me.

    I understand those who say that they REALIZE it's bad, they know that it sucks, but it's their guilty pleasure and they couldn't stop watching it.

    But when people say the story is excellent and the characters are deep and believable and it totaly changed their perception?

    I paid to go see a movie that was badly 3D (I saw better 3D years ago!) had no storyline whatsoever not to mention the characters were sooo unoriginal.
