  • Guys, not interested in sports?
     OP - February 04, 2010, 04:12 PM

So any guys here who've never really been interested in sports much at all? By interest, I mean following professional sports not necessarily playing.

I've always felt a bit awkward around lots of guy friends because I really have zero interest in what's going on in NHL, NFL, NBA etc. I've always found watching sports unbelievably boring and whenever I'm with friends who are going crazy discussing about draft picks or play offs or whatever I swear I want to shoot myself in the face.

And it not that I don't play sports. I love playing it and I'm a pretty fit guy, more fit than most of my buddies that are fanatical about their ESPN. But I cannot stand sports discussion and it's always been an embarrassment for me since everybody expect a guy to be down with sports and I'm sitting there 90% of the time feigning interest in shit that I find less interesting than trimming my pubes.

Anybody else have to deal with the same awkwardness? Or am I the odd guy out?

I understand what you mean, I've never really liked professional sports either.

You're the odd one out, but only because your trying to fit into the heterosexual niche.  Time to come out of the closet Iblis, nothing to be ashamed of here.  Tongue

LOL So because I don't like playing with balls I must like dick!  Cheesy

But seriously if I was gay I wouldn't hesistate to say it. I've already expressed my man-love for Hassan, Richard Dawkins.. and most recently James Cameron who I am extremely gay for.

But its not really the masculinity issue at all here. I'm just not interested in the concept in general. Watching grown men who kick balls around for a living is just such an amazingly boring idea I cannot understand how other guys go crazy explaining to me about all these stats and details about their favorite team.

    Count me in.  Wink
I never could understand the point of following which team has more points in the league, and which player has been bought/sold (talk about slavery). I get a lot of awkward looks when I answer "I don't follow sports" to the question "Which team do you support?". They are making assumption that everybody who is a man is interested in sports, but I find it not more 'manly' than following Big Brother or something like that.

EDIT: No offense to any sport-follower, I am talking about those who make assumptions.

Hey, I'm a woman who understands you here lol sports are lame to watch but fun to play.

I know guys who don't watch sports, and girls who do.

     thnkyu

Thats exactly my same feelings. Thing is sometimes with the company I hang with I can't go "i dont follow sports" without some level of embarrassment as if I comprimised my manhood. Which frustrates me because I have met some seriously fat fuckers who sit there watching espn all day and judge me for not being intrested in sports even though I could punish most of them in any physical exercise.

I find it totally bizarre at the obsession with sports picks and stats and shit like that. I mean like who gives a flying fuck? Why does this shit matter in any way? It seems exactly no different than watching Big Brother or whatever, just some obsessive distraction to wow the masses. That's just my personal opinion.

I'm just finding in increasing difficult to even feign interest in this nonsense anymore.  finmad

Iblis, either you are hanging around some real dickheads if they are truly judging you based on your interest in sports or you're being way too self-conscious and paranoid about the whole thing. I'm not a big football fan, but most of the people I know are and they don't judge me when I say I don't care about this or that game or that I'm not a big NFL fan. Sure I do watch some football, and occasionally I really get into a game, but I don't follow the sport closely. My favorite sport is baseball, but I don't even follow that as closely as most people I know.

So I say you're probably worrying about how your friends perceive you too much. If not, and they really will judge you negatively on that basis or think you less of a man, then they're idiots/dickheads, and you need to make some new friends.

    fuck you

    Your probably right.

It's been a lifelong issue for me since as far as I can remember. Never had a problem playing basketball, soccer and enjoying it. I'm very phsyically active, but once talk about NBA or NHL starts up I immediately get this "must pretend to be on top of this shit" alarm going in my head. A lot of the people I've grown up with are guys who need to talk about the NHL or NBA or soccer to make conversation which can be problematic to deal with and I've become a bit of an expert at feigning interest in stuff I have totally not kept track of.

Hey, its not mutually exclusive - in fact its usually the opposite.  I find alpha males are more likely to love sport and hate BB with a vengeance.  Anyhow I dont watch any sport or read the results for that matter, but I watch Big Brother  Afro

Nah, I'm totally 100% behind you on this. In fact I know and have found lots of cerebral men (for some reason disproportionately affects atheists) who also agree with you.

Well I wouldn't say that. I've met some quite a few intelligent people at my work who are really bright and on top of all sorts of social and intellectual topics but are crazy obsessed with hockey and the Oilers. Maybe in UK most of the sports fans are football hooligan dumbass types, but there are plenty of cerebral guys who are equally obsessed with sports.

I used to be a big fan of sports, and sometimes  still can't resist watching King Federer's shots. I used to watch F1, Football, Athletics, Tennis. Now I realize it is just a big waist of time. The Daily Mail wants blood from bankers, yet Mr Average is happy with superstar footballers earning MILLIONS.

    Pros
    - It gives people drama and a civil way to "win a mini-war" which is human nature.
    - It allows a way of governments to tax the spending
    - Creates jobs
    - In certain sports there is an element of R&D e.g. F1, or TV communications
    - Provides the working week masses something to look forward to/ enjoy/ not think about work
    - Makes the economy marginally more productive when a national team does well

    Cons
    - Can cause violence when the mini-wars go to far
    - Causes certain people to not care much else about the world (though this may be a miselading inference in that they don't care anyway)
    - Drains money people have that could go into other forms of economic investements (private and public)

    Just some thoughts ...

Great post HighOctane. I guess on an analytical, sociological and economic level I can understand it. Still doesn't make me any more interested though.  parrot

At least athletes don't make their money through the exploitation of labor. When Shaquille O'Neal takes bailout money to keep businesses afloat then pulls his loans, starts shuttering factories and voiding labor contracts without even paying out the workers the benefits they've already earned, when David Beckham buys up viable businesses just to cannibalize them and liquidate the assets, putting hundreds or even thousands of people out of work, when Jason Varitek helps finance a coup to protect his business interests in a Third World nation, when Sidney Crosby starts buying politicians to support legislation that directly benefits him, when Ronaldinho engages in glorified loan-sharking and engages in risky lending and investment practices that puts the entire economy in jeopardy, THEN maybe then I'll get upset about them earning millions of dollars.

I love sports. Used to follow NHL and NBA, stats and shit. Not so much anymore. I watch a few football games. Love playing sports more. Fucking love boxing. Mayweather vs Pacquiao, can't wait  dance

I love sports, yeah. Don't have much to say about it though. If I could go back in time I might try to be an athlete. Would love to be play as a right winger in the NHL.

Sometimes I wish I followed sports more. It serves a social function. It lets 2 guys who have nothing in common or don't know each other at all spark up a conversation at a moment's notice. Sometimes I've been dragged to parties by my wife and I'm stuck next to some guy who wants to talk baseball and I can't help him because baseball bores me unless its the world series. I usually watch baseball in October, the Superbowl, The final four, The World cup and the Stanley cup playoffs. I'm mostly interested in the climax.

I'm exactly the same. I'll follow the last few games before the main title. I'll watch the 3 or 4 games before the final Stanley cup match or when the world cup starts up. But aside from that, Im clueless.

In short, there are a lot of things I disagree with here. Best to start a new thread. But interesting to read. But one comment: financiers are the men and women who create growth that allows people to have the time and money to enjoy their sporting entertainment.

    @ Iblis

I have 3 brothers, the 4 of us HATE sports, soccer, tennis... you name it, we hate it... in fact, the mere sight of a soccer field or a sports playground is very depressing to me... I do immensely enjoy running/biking OUTDOORS, though.

PS. as for friends, when they discuss sports, I politely ask them to change the stupid subject, and if they won't, I leave their boring company.
