My hairy eskimo ex-wife had one very long string of hair growing out of her chin. I would sometimes lay my head in her lap and gently tug at it with my lips.

Rumour is that Poppycock is the town bicycle on whom everyone rides. And that you suck the crooked toes of geriatrics. Question is, for much will you clean up my razor sharp toe nails?

alcohol isnt, its has lots of references to alcohol, just says not to drink until intoxication.  From what I understand it was only later, when worshippers turned up to Kaaba & were praying pissed, that it became haram & was banned in the hadith

Oh yeah the abrogation. Yeah this one bothered me as well.

Muslims would say Allah couldn't ban everything at once, it had to go step by step. But there are other things that were banned at once wasn't there? Can't think of what now though Grin
  • Re: Awkward questions to ask "moderate" Muslims...
     Reply #174 - October 30, 2010, 10:37 PM

abrogation refers to meccan & medinan versus in the Quran - however their argument that its the final message still stands, as whatever has been abrogated is still retained within the final message of the Quran.

The example I gave of alcohol is slightly different, where the hadith apparently abrogate the Quran, the supposed final message.

OK, but my point was why does an Omniscient God use abrogation?

God has his limits too, you just can't turn backward nomads into a Utopian paradise overnight.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

I don't think the example of alcohol is a clear-cut example of abrogation, the Qur'an always makes clear that alcohol is a bad substance and the hadith then going on to ban it completely isn't exactly a contradiction.

A more clear cut example of Mo making things up - I mean abrogation - would be him changing the qibla from Jerusalem to Mecca. Why would an omniscient god change his mind?  whistling2

But he has banned things immediately in Islam. Why certain things and not other?

And besides there are clear and specific moments when the ban got tighter, an incline if you may, the incident after the fact. It wasn't as if the ban was following a prepared timeline.
