    is it true that your webcam is always recording, even when its not turned on? My little brother's school had a seminar a few weeks ago, where they invited this police guy to give a speech on internet safety and apparently thats what he said and that his daughter keeps a piece of black tape over it at all times when not in use. Have you ever heard about this? And how does that work?  Shocked

    Does not sound reasonable. He is a police officer giving a seminar on safety, I?m guessing he either doesn?t know enough about IT or thinks it can?t do no harm, or just simply using scare tactics. BUT you should ask at computer forums, and add that story.

    Even if it recorded, where would that data be? Video cam on all the time, should consume loads of data. Where is it stored? Hardware doesn?t work like that, it works along with software telling it do a specific thing. Is the software on? There should also be a light turned on, some green light or something signalling that it's turned on. And with you in front of it I bet it is turned on Wink

    thats what i was thinking though, and why i asked how would that work. i'm no expert in IT but i have a fairly good understanding of how computers work and that just did not seem feasible. i'm wondering if he was just paranoid, from all the other things he said in his speech i wouldnt be surprised... my dad(who attended the seminar) made him sound quite radical about internet safety.

    If there's a highly skilled hacker who could have full access to your computer he would be able to run a program in the background that runs your webcam. But I think that most, if not all, webcams have an indicator(light or whatever) that goes on once the webcam starts running, which means you should know when that (the hacking scenario) happens, even though it is very highly unlikely.

    So either the guy is clueless about what he is saying, or he wanted people to be more careful/paranoid.

    because he doesnt have a clue.  he may have been saying it to be doubly sure, as some may have the settings permanently on for the webcam

    I watched weeds up to the 4 season, mid-way. It fell off.

    You should check out The Wire. And Sopranos. And Oz. Those 3 are the best tv-series ever.

    I've watched the Wire, twice actually and would watch it a third time. The best TV show I've come across so far hands down. I loved it so much I began following David Simon's work and downloaded Generation Kill.  
    My mother told me secretly that my sis and cousins are going to get me the complete Sopranos box set as a birthday gift. Can't wait.  dance

    Oh and just in case you guys are wondering what the best sitcom ever is, it's Arrested Development   cool2 thnkyu

    Yes!! Dexter is fantastic. I also loved Deadwood.
