     OP - February 05, 2010, 12:56 PM

Yet another 'honor' killing in Turkish Kurdistan:

    Quote
The father and grandfather of a Turkish teenager are to face trial for burying her alive because they were concerned that her friendship with boys had brought dishonour on their family.

Although honour killings are not infrequent in Turkey, the especially gruesome manner of Medine Memi?s death has shocked the nation.

A coroner said that Medine had been discovered bound and lifeless in sitting position in a 2m hole dug beneath a chicken coop outside the family?s house in the town of Kahta in Southeastern Turkey, 40 days after she had disappeared. The hole had been cemented over.

According to a post-mortem examination the large amount of soil in her lungs and stomach showed that she had been buried while conscious and suffered a slow and agonising death.

Yeah, most of these types of killings are done by strangulation or a bullet to the head but in this case they purposefully made sure the poor girl would suffer a long, drawn out death.

    F**kin' sadists!

Turkish police have recovered the body of a 16-year-old girl they say was buried alive by relatives in an "honour" killing carried out as punishment for talking to boys.

The girl, who has been identified only by the initials MM, was found in a sitting position with her hands tied, in a two-metre hole dug under a chicken pen outside her home in Kahta, in the south-eastern province of Adiyaman.

Yes, and certain cultural and religious factors encourage those traits to come out in full force.

I can't even imagine Bin Laden or Anjem Chouldry(sp?) doing this to their daughters, what kind of people are these? Dishonor my ass, can't the father at least remember the first time she said 'Papa' or something? Don't these people have any emotions whatsoever?

And Muslims claim religion makes you a more moral person. Yeah right, lick my balls.  finmad

She wasn't even caught with another guy. She simply had a few male friends.

If we try to trace the origin of their decision to torture and murder their daughter we end up with this absurd chain:

"Just think if my daughter was to have another guy. That would be bad. Why would that be bad? Because she might get pregnant and have a child out of wedlock. Why would that be bad? Because society would scorn our family. Why would they scorn our family? Because it would show that we are not a responsible family. What is not responsible about our daughter having a child out of wedlock? Because marriage ensures a stable family environment and the support of the families in the bringing up of the children. I guess that's pretty important, for the love of the child. So let's ensure our love for any possible children that my daughter would produce. Actually, I know that my daughter has a few male friends. I've got no reason to believe she is dating one of them, but the chance that she is is higher since she has more male friends than most girls. That means the chance of my daughter producing a child and not bringing up the child properly is slightly increased. How shall I go about minimizing that risk? I know, be on the safe side and bury her alive."

Actually I'm not sure such a father would think as far as "baby out of wedlock". In such environments, the very fact that the girl might lose her virginity before marriage is the ultimate dishonour.

Yes, but I want to give them *some* credit to their intelligence. Their mind is surely not so simple and stupid.

So what about the men in this story? What I want to do is understand their psychology, not the psychology of the more reformed Muslims - they're easy enough - but these lunatics who kill their daughters for not even reasons... I probably wouldn't be so bugged if it was the odd lunatic now and again, but honour killings have earned a bit of a reputation for itself, and trying to explain them in terms of "honour" and "dishonour" is no explanation at all. What is honour? Why is it valued so much?

Honour means different things to different people.

    Honour of Temple Knight

    Honour of WW2 British Soldier.

    Honour of the Reich.

Actually, it's a family's reputation within the community and what the community thinks of them.  At least in this situation that's what 'honor' means, no matter how you bloody well spell it.

As for Americans stealing and bastardizing English, we just made it better and more efficiant without all those extra 'a's and 'u's!   Wink

There, fixed it for ya. Of course, we Yanks gotta fix a lot of things for you limeys from 1776 onwards.

See, we figured that since "honour" and "colour" and other words originally from Norman French are no longer pronounced in the French fashion, we would drop the "u", as it doesn't make much sense given standard pronunciation rules in English. You guys are just holdin onto the past. Like an old lady still usin Jean Nate and watching Lawrence Welk reruns on PBS.

Yes, we have our own-- Merriam-Webster's Unabridged is considered the standard here, although the OED is also considered an authoritative source, just not necessarily for standard spelling and pronunciation. Noah Webster was actually responsible for much of the standard spelling and pronunciation that Americans have today.
