You're right. I advocate a 0% population growth rate. I would've preferred a negative rate but then we'd have a pensions crisis.

There's gonna be a pensions crisis even at current population growth rates-- immigration is the only thing staving it off in the US and Europe, but eventually even that won't be enough. Problem with having a 0% population growth rate, or even a low rate, in modern times with good medical care, is that the population gets older, and there are fewer young people in the workforce supporting an increasingly large elderly section of the population. Given our current economic system, that's a big problem.

We just need a good nuclear war. That'll fix everything.

A planned economy that focuses on production of the basics to minimize waste of manpower/resources on industries/businesses that do not materially contribute to human society*, along with increased automation? Best I can think of, besides the aforementioned Logan's Run-type scenario or a major disaster like the Black Plague or nuclear war to thin out the herd.

*For example, I remember seeing a commercial for something called "Febreze Scentstories", which was a product that automatically released a different scent into the air every day. How many of our resources are used for production of bullshit goods and services like that shit?
