  • Che Guevara could have started his own religion if he had wanted to
     OP - February 11, 2010, 01:09 PM

Secularly the man is nearly worshiped. He is a huge idol. Imagine if he had claimed to be a Prophet. Imagine what he could have done then. One of the reasons he failed in Bolivia was the Army's propaganda, the farmers turned against him out of fear of reprisals from the army but also because the man was a communist, his bands of people were communists. If he had said I believe in God he would have found more support from the farmers. It?s ironic that Latin America is so religious, when considering how Christianity was spread in those lands.

Kim Jung-Il already started his own religion  grin12 http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSSEO5955

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

    Worshiped by whom?

I don't think he's worshipped at all. He's got an aura mystique, rebellion and martydom around him so that attracts young idealistic campus and lefty types. But he's more of a fashion statement than a god.

Yeah, but it's not just campus lefties. He's still popular in Mexico, Central and South America amongst those who lean left politically. In Caracas and Mexico City just about every other clothes vendor on the street has 10 different Che T-shirts to choose from-- and I'm not talking about the touristy areas.

    fuck you

You have totally nailed it! A Marxist symbol turned into a symbol of consumerism! You know all them kids who think that they are being really radical by wearing Che t-shirts. That's the corrosive power of capitalism for you - even if you claim to be categorically against it capitalism will still find a way to sell you stuff and help you to get the message across. As long as there is profit to be made.

Given their situation I think that such position is quite understandable. However the fact that many caviar lefties in the West adore him is a bit bizarre imho. The guy was anything but a saint.

I don't think so BD. How do you explain what happened in El Salvador? why was Oscar Romero assassinated?
This has nothing to do with religion. The US and its allies will do everything in their power to prevent any socialist from gaining power in any third world country.

Yup, but especially one in their backyard. I'm quite certain that the only reason there is not an armed insurgency against Chavez right now is that our government has too many of its intelligence and military resources tied up in Iraq and Afghanistan. The fact that no such insurgency exists is certainly unprecedented. After the failed coup in 2002, the national security establishment quickly became occupied with the Muslim world, specifically Iraq. And who knows? Had we not already been involved in Afghanistan, the coup might have been more successful with more intelligence resources available.

If you don't mind me asking Q, what is your take on Che?

Big balls, and principled. Good guerrilla leader, admirable in many respects. But dying young as a rebel with your revolutionary principles is easier than attempting to govern as a revolutionary, which is why he left Cuba for Bolivia, and why he's more iconic and beloved than Castro. Had the CIA succeeded in assassinating Castro in the 1960s, he might be viewed the same way as Che, just not as good-lookin (which always helps).

In short-- cool guy but overrated. Comparing him to other Latin American revolutionaries? Well, he couldn't hold a fuckin candle to Bolivar, and he died too young to compare him to Fidel or Chavez. He's about on equal footing with Farabundo Marti.

Hey, who knows how Batista would be viewed today if he had died in the Sergeant's Revolt. right?

    fuck you
