The US and its allies will do anything in their power to prevent any socialist from gaining power in any third world country.
Yup, but especially one in their backyard. I'm quite certain that the only reason there is not an armed insurgency against Chavez right now is that our government has too many of its intelligence and military resources tied up in Iraq and Afghanistan. The fact that no such insurgency exists is certainly unprecedented. After the failed coup in 2002, the national security establishment quickly became occupied with the Muslim world, specifically Iraq. And who knows? Had we not already been involved in Afghanistan, the coup might have been more successful with more intelligence resources available.
If you don't mind me asking Q, what is your take on Che?
Big balls, and principled. Good guerrilla leader, admirable in many respects. But dying young as a rebel with your revolutionary principles is easier than attempting to govern as a revolutionary, which is why he left Cuba for Bolivia, and why he's more iconic and beloved than Castro. Had the CIA succeeded in assassinating Castro in the 1960s, he might be viewed the same way as Che, just not as good-lookin (which always helps).
In short-- cool guy but overrated. Comparing him to other Latin American revolutionaries? Well, he couldn't hold a fuckin candle to Bolivar, and he died too young to compare him to Fidel or Chavez. He's about on equal footing with Farabundo Marti.
Hey, who knows how Batista would be viewed today if he had died in the Sergeant's Revolt. right?
