I have an mp3 of Yusuf Islam saying that hadith at the beginning of one of his nasheeds. When the actual song started, I would restart it to the beginning again  Tongue

I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me.
If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and
if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an
assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm?s length, I draw
near to him a fathom?s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at
    speed.

It still brings a soft chill to the back of my neck.

Yes the last bit: "And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running." used to make me cry.

    Yeah I love that hadith.

Well, when I heard the adhans going off in Istanbul, it really made the hair on the back of my neck stand.

I liked fasting. The feeling of gratitude after the fast. Feeling of solidarity. And I always looked forward for the last day when I could give charity. It felt like I was making one very small contribution and making somebody, somewhere happy. For a short moment.

Also with fasting to keep your temper and be kind even as you are hungry. Teaches discipline.

I also love looking at videos of people in Hajj. At peace, people from all over the world. All colors, shapes and sizes. Stuff like that brings warmth.

They're probably the two things I took the least interest in in Islam: Hajj and Ramadhan. I couldn't stand fasting (if anything I felt further from God for fasting because the feeling of hunger and the dryness in my mouth interupted whenever I tried to remember Allah) and never even gave a thought as to when I would go for Hajj; didn't appeal to me at all.

The unlived life is not worth examining.

I remember Hamza Yusuf using that first bit of the Hadith to make a very loaded statement. He said that the atheists world is presented to them by Allah as though He doesn't exist and likewise for the theist, their world always is presented to them by Allah as though He exists.

Sura Yunus and Yusuf recited by Abdul Baset is beautiful and so is first part of sura Al Rahman.

I also liked this verse in Al Fatiha

Keep us on the straight path. Which Christians say, and some say Al Fatiha is like the God's Prayer but I digress.

It's not the rituals of hajj though I mean the brotherhood/sisterhood there that appeals to me. The different groups collected as one.

Not that I agree with him, but I can see where he is coming from. When I was a Muslim, I thought it was damn obvious that Islam was the true religion and that we'd all have to give an account for our deeds on the day of judgment, so get practising your lines! I couldn't understand why non-Muslims didn't come running to Islam. Now that I'm an atheist, I can't understand why I thought like that...

I had cassette a beautiful recitation of Sura Yaseen by Sheikh Husary that I learnt to recite (by heart) just like he did.

I used to love listening to the Egyptian Qaris when they came to Regents Park mosque during Ramadan.

Also there is a verse in the Qur'an that goes something like 'We have separated you into nations and tribes so that you may get to know one another not despise each other.' It moved me deeply back in the day.

"The ideal tyranny is that which is ignorantly self-administered by its victims. The most perfect slaves are, therefore, those which blissfully and unawaredly enslave themselves."

I wonder what do you personally think of these verses which address charity in a harsh way:

    Surah #68

I think they're powerful and very deep, although a bit harsh... but I'm interested in your opinion...

The way they were scheming and planning not to give anything to the poor, only to find it burned to ashes in the early morning... although you might not like the harshness in it, the image is still very moving... what do you think?

Yes I used to like that verse - I put it on the opening page of Islamia School website that I put up. (They've updated it now - but there are bits I wrote myself, still there - such as this brief history of the school - though they don't give me the credit of course  lol http://www.islamia.brent.sch.uk/about.html )

Kool. Ye i remember you mentioning the verse in your story. There was that verse and one saying 'God is closer to you than your jugular vein.' That one evoked an aire of mysticism which stuck with me.

It is very powerful and I appreciate the way the Qur'an spoke in very strong words in favour charity and against those who cheated orphans etc...

Now of course I see this as the workings of Muhammad's mind, which is another reason I insist he sincerely believed what he said and was genuine about his mission. He clearly had great concern about giving charity - and orphans for example - of course he was an orphan himself.

What I did find was that the traditional movements which comprised of people like Hamza Yusuf and Abdal Hakim Murad recognised a tradition that stretched very far back (to Muhammad) and really brought it to the attention of the muslims in the west. All muslims had before that in the west were either the salafi's, the HT and other "movement" groups or the traditional barelwi/deobandi type exposure.

Good point! I often wonder why there are not more women ex-Muslims?

Why do you think this is?  I have always seen it as being down to a guardian angel thing..

Anyhow my 2 cents.  The feeling that there was an alternative purpose - when I prepared to pray, did wudu, or actually prayed, I momentarily could take myself out of this world and see a higher calling.  It would take me out of this worldly life, and see things problems as of lesser importance, and whilst doing my dua, I actually believed there was a chance that Allah might listen and grant me my wishes [/click heels]

I have to agree wholeheartedly. It does have a rather hypnotic quality to it. If you hear multiple adhans going off in a muslim country, it really does make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.....

.......then again, so did the track "Sadness" by the group Enigma back in the early nineties.  Afro

Personally, I think the Azaan is over rated. When I hear it now it makes me think that a snake is slowly sliding out of the mouth of muezzin.

Well, what I meant was that you dont see as many female ex-muslims finding things they liked about Islam. Which points to it being a very male-oriented religion... but we all knew that. Its just funny seeing that portrayed even AFTER one's leaving Islam.  Wink
