Also there is a verse in the Qur'an that goes something like 'We have separated you into nations and tribes so that you may get to know one another not despise each other.' It moved me deeply back in the day.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "not despise each other" bit doesn't exist in the arabic.  I think some translators just added that bit on.

One of the things I like about Islam/Muslims is the importance of personal hygiene and cleanliness.

For example, if you have a new carpet and someone walks on it just once with their shoes on, then that carpet becomes "unclean" (na-paak) and you can't pray on it anymore unless you wash it.

When you take a piss you must avoid any spashing.  I used to be very careful about this (and still am).

No dogs in the house (but strangely, I heard cats are allowed) wacko

Was this hadith found in the Hadith collection Shahih Iblis?

Brother, I hope you know that collection is not trustworthy. It surely is not mutawatir. The Shahih Kope is what you are looking for, like this mutawatir account:

    Narrated by Belladonnasix
The Prophet (BlackDog) was famous for his libido. It was such like the prowess of 60 mules and 2 teenagers. He devoured women like a gluttonous sultan. And had the temper of a over sized 5 year old when not fed his daily meal consisting of 7 fully grown women and 3 midget women.

I have to agree wholeheartedly. It does have a rather hypnotic quality to it. If you hear multiple adhans going off in a muslim country, it really does make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.....

.......then again, so did the track "Sadness" by the group Enigma back in the early nineties.  Afro

I really disagree mate. Perhaps in Istanbul or mecca where they have excellent loudspeakers or really good qaris, but here in pakistan, half the time you hear these old guys screaming over broken loudspeakers (there's so much static) and it sounds like a lot of wolves howling together. Gets so annoying that i have to put my earphones in to drown down the voice!

I have to admit, after a hippie childhood growing up in a house that forever smelt of dog I really liked this about Islam as well.  Also, because I'm a cat person!  Wink

Yeah, but lots of cats produce the same smell as lot of dogs.  I wonder if its just that dogs are bigger (why do they stink anyway - is it just bad breath from never brushing their teeth?)

I think the difference is that:

A: Dogs produce an oil which keeps their fur from getting soaked through when they are in water and cats don't.  Perhaps this oil produces a lot of that 'dog' smell.

B: Cats are well known for their fastidious grooming habits whereas the only thing that dogs seem interested in grooming is their own butts, or those of other dogs.

Rarely have I come across a cat that stank and when I have it has either been because the cat is old and can no longer groom itself or because it lives in such an unsanitary environment that it cannot keep itself clean.

I don't want to muddy this thread with too much OT, but I think Muhammad had an irrational fear of dogs, that's the reason, here is a hadith from Sahih Muslim:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Book 010, Number 3811:
Abdullah (b. Umar) (Allah be pleased with them) reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) ordered the killing of dogs and we would send (men) in Medina and its corners and we did not spare any dog that we did not kill, so much so that we killed the dog that accompanied the wet she-camel belonging to the people of the desert.

I hear what you're saying. You're spinning my head around.

    dogs, geckos & promiscuous monkeys:

Muslim, Bk. 026, Number 5562:  on the authority of his father that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) commanded the killing of geckos, and he called them little noxious creatures...

He said he who killed a gecko with the first stroke for him is such and such a reward, and he who killed it with a second stroke for him is such and such reward less than the first one, and he who killed it with the third stroke for him is such and such a reward less than the second one.

Bukhari Volume 5, Bk. 58, Number 188: During the pre-Islamic period of ignorance I saw a she-monkey surrounded by a number of monkeys. They were all stoning it, because it had committed illegal sexual intercourse. I too, stoned it along with them.

They do not need to, what they produce is rock hard little balls that do not leave anythíng around the anus to be cleaned away.

    I need proof of this.

    The search for Ilm.

Does it mean knowledge in the true sense of the word? Or only for Islamic science? Is it ILM of the world corresponding to the Quran or simply Ilm of the Quran?

If it is indeed Ilm as in knowledge in the secular sense of the word then yes. If it is only Quranic Ilm then hm I retract it simply because the Quran does not have the answers to all the questions of the world.

No post here. But as a commentary to the documentary History of Islam. The scholars meant that during the Golden age of Islam, Ilm was the focus. That Ilm is the second most repeated word after God. I am trying to find if their statements are accurate.

    @ BD

The knowledge mentioned in the Quran is RELIGIOUS knowledge. It was used to refer to the religious knowledge received by the Christians/Jews as well. (for example, check out 3:19; 42:14; 45:17 all 3 verses are saying the People of the book received the same pure message of submission and became rivaling sects after becoming knowledgeable in their scripture.)

The term: The Age of Ignorance refers to Arab's ignorance of God's true religion.

What i like about Islam ?

It's quite hard for me to imagine anything that i like, what comes to my mind is that it ruined a sizable portion of my life and it's going on the same track.

I can't take lightly, and biryani had nothing to do with Islam.
