Needless to say almost every muslim family claims a connection.  In fact my dad from Siddique and my mum from the main main himself.

My dad proudly showed me a family tree in a Mosque in el-Manial that showed how "Radwan" was related to the Prophet through Fatimah.

Let's face it - all forms of tribalism, racial pride etc... is utter bollocks! (And that includes those who think their race was God's 'chosen people')

I always say that those who claim the superiority of their race or nation are usually the worst examples of it!

billy! Lebanese are NOT *real* Arabs... they're Phonecians... Palestinians are not real Arabs, they're canannites, Egyptians are NOT real arabs, they're, well, egyptians... etc...

*Real* Arabs look like Indians... Period!

So, is there like some perfect language in heaven? How do people communicate?

I would expect a perfect place like paradise would have a perfect language. And Arabic, although very beautiful, is NOT perfect.

I don't know the reference IsLame is referring to, but isn't Arabic the language of heaven?

Our Palestinian lecturer of modern dialects at SOAS always used to joke that Arabic was "Lughatul-Jannah" (The language of paradise) and so if we didn't learn it we wouldn't be able to talk to anyone.  grin12

To me 'perfection' sounds like hell, not heaven. Language is beautiful precisely because it is not 'perfect' (what does perfection in language mean anyway?) and can therefore be shaped by individuals and people to use to articulate human emotion and thoughts - its miscegenated and messy and flexible and maleable. That's why its so good.

    Heaven is boring.

I put in my face in my hands and admit that I'm a real Arab... the shame is unbearable, but I'll live.

I'm saying that you're claiming there is such a thing as a 'pure' Arab when the Arab identity is actually one of a mixture of peoples, who have links and loose affiliation but share a language, many common cultural traits and self-awareness, and are intermarried to some extent too.

He's actually only stating the truth. Their is a racial Arab and a cultural Arab. Lebs, Gippos, Palis, Tunis, Algos - they all be cultural arabs.. basically mediterean peoples who were islamicized and arabized. The Gulf Arabs are the "real" Arabs. Kind of like the difference between a genuine ethnic Englishman vs a culturally English migrant.

*Real* Arabs look like Indians... Period!

Well not really. By "brown" I distinctly mean the south asian racial category - that weird mix of iranian with dravidian racial characteristics which pretty much all Indians/Pakistanis/Bengalis comprimise.

Sure real original Arabs might by mostly brown in skin tone, but they're semitic racial characteristics are very distinct from Indians.

Well, I was making the point to Iblis when he said that Indians can't be Arabs since they're brown when the fact is real or pure Arabs are quite brown and very Indian looking... except for like 1% of real Arabs who tend to have different looks.

I can tell the difference between Arabs and Indians when I see them most of the time.

There might be some resemblance but I think there is more difference too.

Arab identity is wider than just a single ethnic group though, that's what I meant. Egyptians may not be 'pure' Arab but they definitely consider themselves to be part of the Arab 'nation' (very importantly in quotation marks but you know what I mean) -- culturally and artistically they even consider themselves to be the leaders of it!

Well yes, you're speaking about the cultural Arab.

But its just like my comparison to being an "english" person. English can have dual meanings. One very restrictive ethno-racial meaning and another very cultural meaning. A person can be culturally English, but racially/ethnically not at all.

So it's not so much about "purity" or "real" Arabs, but more to do with a ethno-cultural designation that can have multiple meanings and realities.

And you shouldn't be able to tell the difference between an Indian and a typical man from Arabia proper. I myself can't tell the difference, except by their clothing or when they speak.

Take a look at this guy:

He's an Arab *prince*, but without the Arab clothing, he is not different from a typical Indian guy.

Yeah sure. Many gulf Arabs do. But in general they are quite a distinct group with distinct semitic racial features and are definitely not Indian.

Of course there are many south asians that could quite easily blend with Arabs. In my youth in Kuwait I never had a problem mixing with Arab kids since they just thought I was a darker skinned Arab kid who didn't speak much... LOL

I don't think the English comparison is quite the same - there is a transnational cohesiveness and self-awareness to the hybrid Arab identity that is very notable. Anyway, its a dead end discussion, lets just agree that Arab women are hot whether Lebanese or Egyptian.

Well, when I hang out with Saudi friends here in the US and meet Indians on the street, they think they're Indians too... it happens all the time... I think the only two racially different groups that look so much a like are Indians and real Arabs.

Here's another photo of another Arab Sheikh:

The difference perhaps is in mannerism.. Indians tend to be polite while Arabs are quite rude and very loud.. very embarassing to hang out with in general.

Sure that guy looks Indian. But I'd still guess he's Arab first. There are fine details which divide. The way the beard grows (arabs have straighter more dense beards), physique (arabs are more robust). Gulf Arabs often have distinct negroid qualities like bigger lips and more prevalence of curly hair. Skin tone and texture are often different.

Though I'm a bit of a weirdo. I can pinpoint racial ethnic characteristics to minute details and pick out specific ethnicties just by looking.
