  • Religious affiliation of COEM members
     OP - February 19, 2010, 05:27 PM

Please take part in the poll, and choose the best option which might describe you the best. I do understand however that choosing a single option might be difficult for a few people, as it is with me.

    I will go with Pantheism.

Why is Ex-Muslim its own category?  Huh? The poll is about the current religious affiliation of members, no?

The Ex-Muslim option seems a bit unnecessary - anyway I voted Agnostic, though I actually swing a little between Deist, Agnostic, Pantheism and Atheist.

My basic position is Agnostic = "I don't Know" - but I definitely reject all religions.

    Atheist

It is its own category because all the ex Muslims would not be atheists by default. They might be agnostics, or might not have made up their minds beyond rejecting Islam. They might be theists too.

Any way, that is why I sounded a bit apologetic in my OP. It is a bit difficult for many of us to categorize ourselves properly; it is, for me.

Obviously-- but this isn't a poll about what people's former religious affiliation is, it's what their religious affiliation is now. So it makes no sense to have a separate "ex-Muslim" category, as the ex-Muslims could fit into one of the other categories you have already listed.

If you want to see who's an ex-Muslim, go to the "Are you an ex-Muslim?" thread pinned in the "Ex-Muslims Blogs and Bios" subforum.

    I voted Islam.

PS. As for those who don't like the ex-Muslim option, just ignore it and vote your current beliefs or lack thereof.

    @ Charles

Based on this list of religions compiled by non other than yourself, and based on a previous conversation between us, you're either ex-Christian, ex-Jew or ex-Zoroastrian, since only these 3 religions out of the list above, other than Islam, believe in Satan  Wink

You're missing the point-- including that option makes the poll fundamentally methodologically unsound. You will have an inaccurate measure as some ex-Muslims will choose the ex-Muslim option even though they could be classified in one of the other categories, and you will have ex-Muslims who will not choose the ex-Muslim option, but one the categories other than Islam. So you will not have an accurate measure of either who is ex-Muslim or who is in the other non-Islam categories.

It's like making a poll that asks you if you are "Japanese", "Chinese", "Mexican", "French" or "Not Chinese". It fucks the whole thing up. He should have done one poll for what people's current religious affiliation is, then done another poll that was ex-Muslim vs. never been Muslim vs. Muslim.

No, nobody's posting there. Only once somebody joined the forum – a Roman Catholic – and he replied to a few threads I created there. We argued a bit about the silly story of the bears tearing apart 42 children in the Bible, but I wasn't motivated enough to continue debating. It's basically a ghost forum now. Smiley

Thats strange! I mean it was Mina Ahadi (a German Iranian) that started all this. I had a chat with Maryam about this and she said she basically followed her lead (she was a friend of hers). Yet it seems that in the UK it has struck a chord - while, oddly the Germans haven't come out as ex-Muslims in the same numbers. Why do you think that is?

Actually I know the answer - We Brits are better than Germans - we beat you in 1945 and we beat you in 1966 - you don't have a good sense of humour and you don't have as much courage & character as us to leave Islam  Afro

Because people in this forum come from all over the world, including Germany, so posting in an inactive forum rather than an active one, seems pointless.

No, it's because they're too busy watching fetish porn, drinking beer, eating sausages, worshiping Adolf Hitler, listening to Kraftwerk and Rammstein, and picking out the right leather coat to match their black turtleneck and wire-rimmed glasses, and saying stuff like "Ja! Ja! Alles dein basis sind gerhoren uns!" to post there.

Well, I think without the great exodus from FFI we wouldn't have this wonderful and active forum now, or at least it would've taken much longer to get where we are now. We had the advantage of starting off with at least 10 people I guess. The ex-Muslim scene on the Internet seems to be doing pretty well, but can we say the same about ex-Muslims groups in real life? I have no clue how many Muslims declared their apostasy publicly in Germany and how Mina Ahadi is doing with her organization right now (in terms of active membership). Might be strange, but I'm mostly active on English web sites.

I tried to make my German-language forum the official one, you know, with a sub-domain address (forum.ex-muslime.de) from the German COEM web site. I contacted Mina Ahadi and she said she's okay with it and assured me that their administrator will take care of it. A few months have passed and still nothing has happened. Sure, I can't complain, because I could have asked again, but I guess I let it slide into the back of my mind. I was also busy with other stuff, like creating translations, subtitles, our wiki system etc.

Translating your book is an important task to me. It's worthwile, as you're probably the guy with the highest fitnah level in our movement. Cheesy

Right, I get the point. So shall I remove those ex-options, now? But three members have already chosen that option. Will they vote again?
