Religiousity in the Mideast/Khaleej
OP - February 20, 2010, 07:11 PM
Most religious leaders here in the khaleej have enormous contempt for non-muslims(especially atheists) living here. They call this the heartland of Islam; which should only be filled with Muslims. People here take their Islam seriously. I remember when I was about 12 or 13, if we didnt go to the mosque at prayer times, the mutawwa(religious police) would forcibly drag people to pray.
Once one of my Hindu friends was forced in a mosque. He tried to tell them he wasnt a muslim, but they would just ignore it. So he just had to copy the people who were praying.
Calling someone an atheist here is considered like the worst insult ever. Even Muslims here who speak publicly about the misconceptions held here by the people about Non-Muslims, tend to be branded as agents of America, CIA, or just closet Atheists/apostates.
Even non Sunnis like Shia/Sufis are heavily discriminated against here (esp. in KSA).
Although it would be great if there were any organizations to support apostasy here, I just dont see it happening in the next 50 years or so.
What do you guys think about religiousity here in the Mideast
