lawl that was good.  I never ran into any atheists who argued with me when I was a missionary but that would have have helped me on my path a little quicker.  The brutal stories tend to get left out of Protestantism or they get selectively edited to keep the good parts.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Missionary had a slightly different context in my sect of Christianity.  All 19 old males are expected, but not commanded to go on a 2 year mission and no more.  My sect doesn't have a strict clergy so there was no super intensive theological studies.

    Long post incoming Smiley

Alright sect first: Historically - Mormonism started in 1830 with Joseph Smith Jr.  who reportedly saw Jesus Christ and God and was commanded to start a new religion.  Joseph Smith revealed a new book of scripture called the Book of Mormon which gave account of a lost tribe of Israel in America.  He gathered followers and the movement had to relocate several times because of troubles with neighbors.  Eventually they built a city in Illinois called Navoo. The governor of Illinois issued an extermination order ordering the death of members  and confiscation of all property.  Joseph Smith was killed in jail and the Brigham Young set out west with the followers to Mexico and set up in the Salt Lake valley and set up Salt Lake City and a lot of the cities in what is now known as Utah.  This is the short version there is a lot more.

    Theologically

Mormonism is set on the belief of Restorationism, or the belief that the original church that Jesus set up was the most correct.
Mormonism rejects the traditional trinity arguments made by Catholics etc.  They believe that God and Jesus Christ are individual beings will the Holy Ghost being a incorporeal being.

Also additional scripture was revealed in The Book of Mormon ( hence the name Mormons) about tribes in America, also additional scriptures regarding the modern church as it was being set up and growing, and a few others.  Mormonism believes that the head of the church was a prophet and that prophets had always been coming to earth to various groups and prophets continue to be called ( the head of the church is considered a prophet), there are 12 apostles, and various titles given in the new and old testament.  Polygamy was instituted in the 1830's and the discontinued in the 1850's.   Marriage in the theology is eternal or in other words if a husband and wife are married by the church they are married on Earth and in Heaven.  No sex before marriage which gets lampooned like so

    Heaven and Hell

The theology is that before we came to Earth we already existed and were progressing in learning but could not continue without being tested further.  We chose to come to Earth to gain bodies and be tested mortally.  If we do well then we aren't given a static paradise or everlasting hell but continue learning.  Those who fail on this earth will progress far more slowly.  ( Think of Earth has being a school instead of solely existing just to worship God.)

They are known to build temples that look like this

This is a synopsis with a lot missing.

    My Mission:

All 19 year old males are expected to go on a mission while women can go when they are 21 if they wish.

The missionary doesn't pick where he wants to go and has to pay for the mission for the two years.  It took me a year to save up about $10,000.  I sent in my papers and was picked to go to the Cuyo region ( Mendoza, San Juan, San Luis Providences) of Argentina.  My brother is in Peru right now.  The attire is white shirt and tie with a suit without exception ( well except Samoa where they were grass skirts).  The women were long dresses and conservative clothing like so...

Just for kicks here is an sister LDS missionary from Israel.

The term is for 2 years for males 1 year 1/2 for women.  The missionary isn't allowed to watch TV, listen to the radio, watch movies, or do general entertainment activities.  Flirting with the opposite sex is forbidden, and 24 hours a day is dedicated to missionary effort.  The missionary is paired with another missionary ( of the same sex) and usually work an geographical area tied to the local church.

First I went to the training center located in Provo Utah to learn theology and do language study. I got 3 years work of uni language work condensed in 2 months and 6 hours of theology a day for two months.  I then flew to Argentina and found out that 3 years of language study in 2 months means absolutely nothing.  I was teamed up with a Puerto Rican and went to a small suburb of San Juan Argentina.

The day starts at 6:00 in the morning, usually it is 30 minutes to eat and shower then 30 minutes of personal study, then an hour of partner study, then planning the day out.  Then from 9:30 to 9:30 at night it is out in the streets.  The methods are pretty open.  Sometimes I knocked doors ( or clap in front of the door as that is the custom in Argentina) other times I tried to get interviews for radio or television, other times I would visit member's houses to see if they had neighbors, friends ect. who were interested.  We were required to do 4 - 8 hours of community service that did not relate to proselytizing.  That was pretty strictly announced.  We were not in any way suppose to tie anything into doing the community service, just help out then leave.

The experiences are varied.  I was shot at, held up, had TV interviews, had a debate with a pair of Catholic priests infront of their local parish,  hiked along some seriously deserted roads in the Andes to find people,  set up a church in a small town including setting up land ect. got chased with a knife, possibly met an ex Nazi, saw a lot of heart breaking things, saw alot of people messed up on drugs, met some amazing people, made some life long friends,  among the few things that happened.

Thanks deus - that was interesting.  Are there any restrictions on marriage?  What made you apostacise and how are you're family taking it?

Kind of yes.  Marriage in the temple ( the big buildings ) for all eternity is restricted to members of the same faith, but anyone can marry anyone they just get married " till death due them part".  The cultral aspect of courtship is a practice I like though.  Dating is usually discouraged before 16 but after 16 dating gets elevated to a national sport.  Usually girls have 3 or 4 dates with different guys every weekend and it is expected to take out several girls on dates during the same time period.  No sex before marriage though which looking back was bad, but the dating part really helps getting over the gender divide.  Intermixing of genders is encouraged a lot ( we had dances and events every week).

What made me apostatize?  On the mission I came in contact with a lot of different religions, and a lot of life experience that 1) made me realize there were logical errors and historical facts that didn't quite match up , 2) the general lack of any evidence of a supreme being. As I dug deeper I kept running into a " take it on faith" attitude which didn't convince me.

My family takes it well.  They keep praying I'll come back and keep trying to get me to go back to church and to hook with with a church girl, but nothing too bad.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Deus.. if polygamy is not allowed then what's up with the tv-show Big Love?

There is the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and then there is the Fundamentalist Church .........Saints.  The fundamentalists broke off when the mainstream church decided  ( or revealed) that polygamy was going to be revoked because 1) it was starting to get out of hand with random members claiming multiple 14 year old brides 2) The US government was threatening to burn Salt Lake City and throw polygamists in jail.   The mainstream church still believes that polygamy will be reenacted someday, but the laws of the land dictate that they can't.

Fundamentalists believe that it was an eternal dictate and couldn't be removed.  The are usually in hiding or use some shady legal deals to get around.  The show is about the Fundamentalists.

An aside:  On my mission I was in charge of another partnership of sister missionaries.  They called me at 2 in the morning one night claiming that an evil spirit had knocked the mirror off their wall.  So me and my partner show up still half asleep and I tell them I'm not going to do anything because I'm not convinced.  So I hang the mirror back up, comfort the sisters, and head back to my apartment.  The next night I get another call from the sisters claiming the mirror had fallen again and this time they were hysterical.  So I go over there and sure enough the mirror had fallen.  They wanted me to do an exorcism which I had to remind them that that was the Catholics we didn't do that.  So I hear noise from downstairs ( they were renting an upstairs apartment from the family down stairs).  I put 2 and 2 together and put the mirror back up and then go downstairs and asked the landlord if I could slam their door.  Sure enough during the weekend the teenagers downstairs got drunk, came home, and drunk slammed the door shut which caused the upstairs wall to shake making the mirror fall.  Chalk one up to rational thinking.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

    From Wikipedia

It was also a factor in the 1857 invasion of Utah( then a territory) by the United States Army, and was the cause of an intense legal conflict during the late 1800s, culminating in the temporary legal dissolution of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and its institutions. The LDS Church officially abandoned the practice in 1890.
