Variation in divorce rates by religion:
    Religion    % have been divorced
    Jews    30%
    Born-again Christians    27%
    Other Christians    24%
    Atheists, Agnostics    21%
    http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_dira.htm

    What's your opinion in general?

I think divorce will probably be low for Islam due to the fear of Allah. However I think Christianity in the West is liberal enough to have divorce rates as high as Atheists. Though interestingly, Atheists aren't the highest, it's the lowest. What does this infer? That stable people (who can work out there is no religion) are also good at working out how to keep a stable marriage ... or don't get married ... ?

I search this because a friend's parent's have got divorced. She's atheist, not sure if her parents are too, but I think it's an interesting topic.

Woman's increasing economic power is a major factor for the increasing divorce rate as well ( maybe more than religiosity, though they are related as well)

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

I think divorce will probably be low for Islam due to the fear of Allah.

Probably also because Muslimas are on average less economically active and hence more dependant on their husbands.

I remember reading an article that said divorce rates amongst Muslims in the West is on the increase and already quite high.

I think things like being uprooted and away from traditional communities (and thus less pressure to from family/community to remain in an unhappy marriage) and the conflicts between changing views on roles were mentioned as factors.

I posted the link a while back - either here or on another forum - but I can't for the life of me remember it now.

With the triple talak divorcing couldn't be easier! Polygamy is affecting marriages, what a surprise! And the increasingly educated women mean men cant keep a control on them Roll Eyes

If the trend continues, there will be eight million single women in the Kingdom by the end of the decade, according to Dr. Ebtisam Halawani’s study.

OMG!  Just what are those Saudis going to do with all those spinsters?  Perhaps allow them to marry non-Saudis for a start!  Tongue

I've found these stats for the US comparing different religions, but they're statistics show unusually high divorce rates (or am I being optimistic?)- http://www.edivorcepapers.com/divorce-statistics/divorce-statistics-religions.html
Islam is included in the bottom bit.

I suspect their sample size is fairly small, as the figures vary considerably

There is also the unreported mosque marriages, which could be polygamous etc to consider adding to the equation, so i think would be near 41 percent in the US of a divorce of sorts, but not recognized by govt's.

RE ease of divorce in Islam.

So, wife does something which infuriates the husband. He says 'I divorce you' in the heat of the moment and hey presto! Islam requires them to separate for 3 months before they can live together. Repeat the same thing in anger, and lo! if its said three times the wife has to marry husband no.2, consummate the marriage, get him to divorce her before she can remarry her first husband.

And of course, if you're married under the law of the land then they're forced by these arbitrary rulings to divorce. The concept of forgiving things said in anger or saying things off hand which you do not really mean doesn't have any bearing in Islam. 'tis a cold faith, divorced from humanity.

    Hmm, interesting.

Well it's a good thing to see divorce rates increasing for Muslims in the West & even in KSA (!), there is some freedom at least!
