  • Is there a correlation between atheism and peace?
     OP - February 26, 2010, 07:45 AM

Interesting video. The question is, is there a correlation between atheism and peace, or is the reason why peaceful countries listed (Sweden, France, Denmark, Japan) are just more developed / educated rather than simply having a larger atheist demographic?

I'm not sure how reliable the statistics are, though I think they seem pretty straight-forward.

I was already aware of an article that stated that a rise in atheism was correlated with a rise in average intelligence, but I'd wonder if a rise in atheism correlates with a rise in peace?

I think it's more a rise in peace and good standards of living (education, health) results in less religiosity.

Iblis has mad debaterin' skillz. Best not step up unless you're prepared to recieve da pain.

I think its more because you are freer to advance and change rules and regulations. Without dogma. You can point to failures and say aha this is where we went wrong, lets implement this. You can also look at other solutions and see if they might work in your country.

perhaps, but i was looking at the data the other way around. I think its because more advanced societies tend to ditch religion more so than the more primitive ones.  These rely on base antiquated religion rules & dogma to provide some form of rules, morality and perhaps even governance..

There is a correlation but not a causative one. I assume how it works is that nations become safer and more advanced and then they ditch religion not the other way around. Although Qatar and Oman are among the safest so it's not easy to deduce anything from the data.

Of course, but we are looking at data like this we look at the the broad brush effect of Islam or religion in general, not focusing on the few anomolies, minutiae or exceptions..

Way too many variables to assume the correlation implies causality either way, but what you, Iblis, and IA have said about the potential causality is certainly plausible.

    fuck you

It’s not only that there is a correlation between atheism and peace – the correlation is a fundamental one.
In the French revolution of 1848 the ruling Party of Order was a coalition of two royalist wings, the Bourbons and the Orleanists. The two parties were (by definition) unable to find common ground at the level of royalism since one cannot be royalist in general – one can only support a specific royal house.
The only way these two could unite was under a banner of the “anonymous kingdom of the Republic”. Therefore the only way to be royalist in general is to be a republican.

Same is true for religion. One cannot be religious in general – one can only believe in a particular god(s) and hold a particular dogma to the detriment of others. The failure to unite religions shows that the only way to be religious in general is under the banner of “the anonymous religion of atheism”.

Today when religion emerges not only as a huge source of violence around the world but also fundamentally as its instigator, its true cause, various religious and non-religious communities can truly thrive only under this banner of atheism.
Consequently atheism is perhaps our only chance for peace.
