Now this may be random but I need some opinions regarding current grade school education.

At what level should a child be learning about the underground railroad? does underground railroad refer to anything other than the slave's escape in the 1850's?

My 7 year old brother has been absent due to chicken pox for quite some time, and the teacher called my dad to inform that he has a project due on monday regarding the underground railroad. I dont think my dad realized what the teacher meant, and we have no other information on this assignment. I tried asking my brother about slavery and black history and he doesnt seem to know what i'm talking about. This doesnt make any sense, I dont get why a teacher would ask a 2nd grade student to do this kind of research.

anyhow, atm I think speaking to the teacher again to clarify would be ideal. But I'm still confused and wonder if I'm entirely wrong, and his project is actually about subways?  Huh?

    Grin

Unless this teacher is ancient I doubt she would use "underground railway" to refer to subways. But you never know I guess? Tongue

I moved to Canada when I was in grade 6 and recall being taught about slavery and the underground railway *after* moving here.. so as far as my experience goes it was taught later than age 7. In fact I think it was grade 7-9 that I learned of this topic.

But perhaps things have changed in the canadian curriculum, I dunno. In my estimation it seems a bit of historically intense topic for 2nd grade kids to be learning about slavery and such. lol Perhaps she did mean subways? Weird.

yeah it is weird.. the only reason I question the subject is because of how heavy the topic is for a 7 year old.. I dont know if he can fully grasp concepts such as slavery and racism..

Give the teacher a call and ask him/her to elaborate "underground railroad".
