I will never be rude or unjustly mean spirited to anyone, but I reserve the right to dislike a person. For some reason, 'not liking' someone you're apparently supposed to like(relative, teacher, boss, homeless mother of 5 etc) is a taboo of some sort. Understated, and not as prominent as before, but it still happens to come accross someone you dont quite like,
and somehow feel ashamed to admit it, as if its a bad thing.
But if you think about it, dislike is a very natural sentiment, and there are tons of people out there who you simply do not get along with. No need to start fights over nothing, but I shouldnt have to pretend to like this person anyhow.
This feels a little hard to explain, maybe I should illustrate with an example: I have some relatives temporaarily living in my family's basement apartment. everyone there is nice, but the father I find quite unpleasant. He's weird, arrogant, condescending, socially inept and in many ways stupid. There's simply no other way to put it.
The man is stupid.
He looks down on you and makes really odd jokes, doesnt show any signs of kindness or interest in others, and if he does ask you a question he'll make it sound so condescending its almost like an accusation. I've never heard this guy admit he's wrong, not even once in an argument, regardless of topic, if you counter him, he'll stay silent and shrug but he'll never say "maybe youre right".
The other day he asked me how many students went to my Uni and i said 50,000. His immediate answer was flatly, thats impossible. Its been years since he's been in college, let alone one in Canada, he knows nothing about my Uni and still feels like his opinion is worth more. To make things worse, he started saying things like, what, you probably have 30 students in a class. I told him sometimes theres hundeds, and he says, well lets say theres a hundred students for each class in each year and each faculty, thats like what, 1000? wtf

My dad even confirmed by saying he read in the paper that my school has 50,000 students, but no response to that of course. The school itself could contact him and say it, he'd sit there and raise his eyebrows at most.
anyways.. I just dont like him. And personally I dont see anything wrong with that. But I still get the feeling I'd be judged for having such an opinion of an elder relative. Am I wrong?
I am personally a peace loving person, and in no way wish to see animosity spread through people, but I wonder if Im the only person who's noticed something wrong with the social concept of disliking others.
