  • Strange childhood dream
     OP - March 01, 2010, 05:28 PM

When I was about 8 years old I remember being asleep one night and I had a dream which showed a man with a mask and a pistol. I woke up from the dream and I found my mom screaming and she told me there was a burglar in the house (she had locked us in the bedroom).

We made it out completely unharmed from there and the burglars probably got scared and left without completing the robbery, but I kept thinking about this dream for a long time and how weird it was that I had a dream showing a burglar at the same time as a burglary was happening in the house. It almost felt/feels like it was a warning.

Of course back then I attributed this to me being religious and I started praying etc a lot for a while, but now that I'm an atheist (pretty much) this dream still confuses me.

Has anyone else had any experiences like this?

you heard the scream in your dream, so your brain logically made a connection to a man with a pistol.  Burglars dont tend to carry pistols, so it probably wasnt correct anyway..

No, these burglars had a pistol as well as a mask. I did hear the scream but why would it be linked to burglars and not to anything else that screams can be linked to..

When you woke up your mother was already in the room with the door locked, so you don't know what you heard her say while you were still sleeping.  She might have been screaming "Burglar! With a gun!" for all you know.

Its likely to be yet another coincidence - but amazing coincidences appear to regularly occur to you.

I wonder whether you brain is correctly wired - perhaps events happen and your brain is shortwiring them into the past, so it appears that occasionally things you see are a premonition, when in fact they arent.  How often do you get correct premonitions? Do you tend to get them when you are stressed or anxious?

It is possible that she was going "Burglar!" to alert the rest of the people in the house.. but its still strange that your brain could take that and you see a dream with a burglar in it?

Well actually this is the only example of 'premonitions' that I can remember..

It isn't strange at all, that's how the brain works.

Not really.  Your story reminded me of an early memory of my brother.  He was petrified of a new alarm clock my mum bought him.  It made a very loud electronic echoey noise. Everytime it went off he would have this dream about Daleks about to kill him.  The brain is supposed to take stimuli and make sense of them, if it didnt, then we would be buggered.

I'm a bit torn about this. On one hand its very possible that she did scream off "Burglar!" or something like that to alert everyone else in the house.

On the other hand, when I woke up, I remember this clearly that I had no thought of there being a burglar in the house (although I did remember the dream with the man in the mask), and when I woke up my mom was just screaming hysterically without saying anything. I remember when I saw her that I thought she was having a fit of some sort, and the thought of there being burglars in the house didn't occur to me until she told me. So its also very likely that she didn't say anything and just screamed because that's what she was doing after i got up.

That makes sense, sometimes when I'm asleep and i hear people talking in my room, their voices get incorporated in whatever dream I'm having until I wake up and realize its just the people talking in the room. But then why would my mom screaming be linked to an image of a man in a mask and a pistol.. shouldn't screaming be linked to something gory like someone getting killed, blood being spilled, etc?

quite possibly thats where your dream would have ended up, if you had not woke up soon after her screaming...

It is more than likely a coincidence. As Derren Brown says, wouldn't it be weird if coincidences never happened?!

Its not that strange. For example, I was having a dream and all of a sudden, I was in the toilet having a piss. And then when I woke up, I found that I had wet the bed. So my brain worked me needing a piss into the narrative of the dream.

And did your brain work it into the narrative of the dream as well?! When I woke up, I wasn't as pissed off, as I was amazed that my brain managed to do that!

    Hey guys,

This is seriously nuts (and I swear I'm not making this up). 1 or 2 nights ago I had a dream about an old friend of mine who hadn't spoken to me in 1 year, and when I got up I kinda had the feeling that i might hear from him again, and today when I checked my email after 2 days i had received a lot of emails from him asking whats up etc.

Next time you get a premenition like this, and if you really think you have special powers, write it down on the forum first and see if it occurs.  That way you can rule this out..

Honestly I was thinking about posting this when I had the dream - but I thought i'd get make fun of so I didn't post it, and I also told myself that its probably just a dream even though I kept getting the feeling he'd contact me.

And then i checked my inbox today and there were 4 emails from him.

I don't think that at all, I think that if there's something behind this it could happen to anyone, not just me.

I mean, if i had any 'special powers' then i should be able to use this on will to tell what's going to happen in the future, win gambles, etc, but this stuff happens without my choice or control (if there even is anything non-accidental about this).

Cheesy  This has happened to me too.  In my dream I went to the toilet, pulled down my knickers, sat down, and even heaved a sigh of relief, and then woke up as I realised I was in the middle of wetting the bed.  I was 15.

Well it doesnt seem to happen to most of us here, so you do have 'special powers'.

Cheesy Don't attribute the numbers to me, to be honest I never even really saw them everywhere (other than when I added my postal code and phone number), I just posted that article to see what you guys thought of it.

And no I got no signs other than the power coming on at the time I was asking for a sign but that can very well be an accident, and this in no way makes me a believer in god or anything like that.. i'm not attributing this to god. I don't know if this dream, etc was an accident or not and/or what prompted it.

And this doesn't feel like special powers at all because I can't consciously use it, it happens without any choice or control on my part.

I'm just posting it here because I think its mysterious and if there's any sort of afterlife/higher power I would like to know about it Tongue.

I had a spate of those kind of dreams right before I moved to England.  I was like, WTF???  I'm 20-something and wetting the bed again?  It turned out to be stress related due to everything going on in my life at that time.  The dreams and bedwetting stopped once I got over that tumultuous period in my life.

From a spiritualist pov, Liberated, I think this is your higher self speaking to you through dreams, etc.  I have this happen all the time where I get a song stuck in my head and then it plays on the radio, or I think of someone and then the phone rings and it's them on the other end.

I have read about these types of phenomena quite a bit and believe it is a way for our 'guardian angels' or 'spirit guides' if you will to communicate with us.  They can also use electrical fields, like turning the lights on and off and making them flicker and stuff like that.

The other week I was preparing to book a flight home with Delta Airlines (who had a very bad reputation when I was a kid.  We used to make jokes about them in the schoolyard) when the circuit breaker for all the wall outlets in my flat tripped cutting off the power to my phone and computer so I lost my connection with the lady I was talking to at Delta.  I took this as a sign that I should NOT fly with Delta and therefore am looking at flying with another airline when I go home.

I may sound like a bit of a kook to some people here but since I was a child I have always had this gut feeling that I had been on this earth before in the past.  My mom always used to tell me that she believed me to be an old soul and there are many instances where I get the feeling that I have seen or experienced a particular event or sensation in a past life.

Ever since my grandparents passed away I have at times felt them around me.  I don't see them but I just get a mental image of them and a feeling that someone is watching over me.  When I got hit by a car crossing the street the other week I think 'someone' was there as I really should have had more injuries than a fractured humerus and some bruises, I mean I went FLYING through the air and landed in the middle of the road but my clothes weren't even torn or scratched or anything!  My shin took the brunt of the impact from the car when the bumper hit it but it didn't break the bone and only left a small bruise.... I dunno....

I also get this kind of feeling sometimes. Personally I'd love to believe in reincarnation but the rational side of me raises questions that I can't answer - so I choose to believe in a materialistic world instead not because I like the idea, but because it has more evidence on its side.

For example if I think about the idea of a soul, I think about how there can be one since it can't be seen or detected in anyway, and once you're brain dead you can't see or feel anything, therefore how would the soul exist and how would it think without a brain or a nervous system, etc.

Therefore although I'd love to believe in soul and an afterlife I stay an atheist although I don't like the idea, because it seems more logically correct to me.

Sorry Nour, but think about all the other people who end up dead in car accidents - where is there guardian angel. Think of the times when you were not protected by your guardian angel.
