I think like a lot of people, having equal rights is something we all pretty much agree on.
In the Western world, at least, this battle is already done. Pretty much everyone agrees with it.
The political, economic, and social changes have pretty much taken place.
This is not to say you'll never run into a sexist man. Just like men will probably run into a sexist women. Cultural gender roles, stereotypes... will be there. I'm talking about the grand changes at the political and general cultural level.

Claiming yourself to be a feminist in this equal capacity is like like me saying I'm an abolitionist. Yeah, it is technically true, non-controversial, and provides a moral identity. I am against slavery, but it's not particularly relevant to the issues of race in this day and age.

These are the fights of feminism today:

Ensuring that women make up X% of certain jobs. There are real issues here in terms of culture, old boys club, mentorship, meritocracy, group preference.
Just as a quick example, making the work environment more polite and womenized is not about equality. You're simply replacing a 'male' culture workspace which in the stereotype is brash, rude, argumentative, competitive... with one of stereotyped 'female' culture (polite, passive aggressive, bureaucratic...). I'm not here to say which is better or worse. I'm simply saying making such changes in the workplace is not about 'equality'.

Reproductive issues are another big one.
If a women is at home taking care of her kids, what happens at work?
Are the same opportunities there for men to stay at home?
How about single people or more traditional husbands who might work harder at work, as they don't have kids. Should they be working harder and be more relied upon, and yet not given any preference in terms of pay/advancement?

    Violence against women.
When is consent there in terms of drinking, partying, social media comments....

Calling yourself a feminist today generally implies that you are on the very pro-woman side of all these issues... and that does tend to mean being against men, as these issues are not as easily clear cut as the old equal rights debate. And as such, it does tend to have that polarizing effect. I personally prefer the term, I'm for equal rights.

You saying the work is "done" and everything is fine in the West just shows there is a lot more work to be done than we even dare to think Roll Eyes Not gonna go into discussion about this due to lack of motivation and time to try and explain everything. But there are still gender discrimination out in the work place, in our social lives and human interactions etc. It pervades our whole society. We still have restricting gender roles that affect both men and women. It's just that it is a bit more subtle, just like we rarely see outright blatant racism, but "subtle" racial discrimination is still a reality whether that fits our self-image or not...

I was chatting with a friend of mine a while ago on sexism in the work place, she made the comment on how women are definitely treated differently. An example was aggressiveness and speaking your mind as a man was encouraged and praised but if you do it as a woman you're basically a bitchy cunt. The culture is that women should be more passive and smile etc, which right there is something that has a huge effect on your work life and advancement.

I think also that we women (i mean some women) don't know how to be authorative and opinionated without turning a bit bitchy, i've seen it with managers and bosses, we sometimes arent able to seperate our emotions and be diplomatic, something we need to work on too.    We still have a long way to go in the west but if people only knew what lewd things women in other poorer do to get professional work and what they attach to their Cv's/resume's to get it,  is shocking and very sad.

Perhaps it isn't about the women being bitchy, just that they are perceived as "bitchy" because they say or do thing in a way that is "traditionally masculine". I recently saw a comedy show where a couple of women were acting like "typical" men. That is, if men acted like that it would go unnoticed. But when women acted in the exact same way, people either laughed or got mighty mad because they thought the women were "crazy" or whatever...

I would say perception plays a big part. I wonder if it might also be something about growing up? You could react like you react when your mum is annoying you, some kind of association thing. Hmm, I wonder if there are any studies on this.

I would describe both men and women as puttering around the house/garden just so you know.  I have always considered that word gender free, maybe others don't.  :/

Always thought it was pottering rather than puttering. You learn something new everyday...

I am my own worst enemy and best friend, itsa bit of a squeeze in a three-quarter bed, tho. Unhinged!? If I was a dog I would be having kittens, that is unhinged. Footloose n fancy free, forced to fit, fated to fly. One or 2 words, 3 and 3/thirds, looking comely but lonely, till I made them homely.D

Regardless of gender-neutrality it still sounds pejorative to me, and hence belittling the role of homemakers.

The fact it seems that way to you doesn't mean that's how it is to me. It's unfair to insinuate my own meaning, and when I reply to a question respond with "Sure" in a way that clearly indicates you think I'm lying.

Could just be cultural differences here then.  I putter/potter (happy now free spirit Tongue) around my house, and my garden.  I don't feel belittled describing it that way.

It's what I am doing.   Wink

Pottering is a genderless term, just means doing activities without a pre structured plan, or lots of light chores all at once, pottering around usually being in a happy state of mind, humming a song in your head kind of thing  Smiley

It's not about agreeing to disagree. If you didn't mean it the way it came across I can accept that, I'm sorry I misunderstood you. But the fact remains that how you view a certain word or phrase doesn't mean the person using it also views it that way. I'm not going to agree to disagree with you, I'm telling you for a fact that the way you feel about it is not how I meant it, nor would anyone I know view it the way you took it. As Berbs and suki took it the way I meant it, perhaps it's a British/English thing.
