     OP - March 11, 2010, 11:45 AM

    Quote
    Punishments of Hell
    1. Hell is so deep that if a stone were to be thrown into, it would travel for 70 years to reaching at the bottom.
    2. The breadth of each of the four walls around Hell is equivalent to a distance covered by a walking journey of 40 years.
    3. Hell has 7 gates.
    4. Hell had been lit for one thousand years until its flames became red. Again it was heated for another thousand years till its colour became white. Still again it was burnt for further thousand years and its white color flames turned pitch black.
    5. Even the fiercest fire of this world is 70 fold cooler than the fire of Hell.
    6. The lightest punishment in Hell would be the wearing of ?Fiery shoes" which would cause one's brain to boil.
    7. Hell in infested with venomous donkeys and if they were to bite a person then he or she will suffer pain for 40 years.
    8. For food, the dweller of Hell would be given Zaqqum which is a prickly tree, so bitter, that even if a single molecule of it were to spill onto this earth it would make all the foodstuff of the world bitter and unpalatable.
    9. For drinking, the denizen of Hell would be provided with hot, boiling pus mixed with blood, matter, urine and tears etc. of the dwellers of Hell. If a bucket of this foul liquid were to be splashed over this earth, the entire world would be upset and disrupted by its most foul stink.
    10. Boiling water would be poured over Jahannami's head and this will cause their internal organs to melt and leak out through their feet.
    11. The inmates of Hell would be lashed with heavy clubs of iron. If one such club was to be placed upon this earth, the combined strength of all the human beings, as well as all the Jinns, would fail to lift it; and if a mountain is struck with one of these clubs it would cause the whole mountain to disintegrate.
    12. The dwellers of Hell would be burnt daily for 70 thousand times.. Every time, after the skin and flesh is burnt; they would be restored to life so that they can continuously taste this punishment.
    13. A drunkard will be given blood, pus, sweat, filth, etc.. to drink in hell.
    14. All the haughty people will be gathered in the Hereafter and driven towards Hell but their bodies would be reduced to the size of ants and they will be given to consume the excretions of the dwellers of Hell.
    15. Some sinners would be made to climb ?SAUD? which is a mountain of fire in Hell, and then dropped from its peak and this process would continue forever and ever.
    16. The dwellers of Hell would be pound in chains which would be greater in length than the distance between the sky and the earth.
    17. The clothes of sinners in Hell would be highly inflammable.
    18. Beside physical torture, the dwellers of Hell would also be subjected to mental harassment through the taunting by the guardian of Hell who will remind them of their misdeed on earth and remarks "Now taste the fire" etc.
    19. The sinners and disbelievers would be humiliated to such an extent that besides their revolting ugliness and pitch black faces, their upper lips would be touching their foreheads and the lower lip dangling around the navel.
20.. The dwellers of Hell would weep so much and shed so much of tears and blood that furrows would be formed on their cheeks.
    21. The tongues of Hell-inmates would be so long and protruding from there mouths that others would trample and step on them.

    22. Shayateen will also rebuke the denizens of Hell.
    23. The dwellers of Hell would display their rage and fury on those who led them astray.
    24. The inhabitants of Hell would appeal to the guardians of Jahannam to intercede on their behalf in the court of Allah but their pleas would reject. They would make direct supplication to Allah but their prayers would not be granted.
    25. They will then abide forever in Hell, continuously lamenting and braying like asses (jungle animals).

I mean they are all pretty vile and disgusting, but which one used to worry you the most?

For me it was number 12.  To have my skin burnt off and then back on and then burnt off again, 70,000 times daily?  That shit is terrifying for a young kid, especially one who you just burnt as an example of a mini version of what it will feel like.

Which one used to frighten you the most, or cause you the most concern if not fear?

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I only get scared about hell when I know I have done something really bad (admittedly very rarely these days *halo appears over head*). Otherwise I do think that punishments described in the Quran are only metaphorical. For example the 'burnt skin being replaced with fresh skin' may simply be describing the fact that the punishment, whatever form the punshment is, will be long lasting rather than something transient leading to to immediate death or inability to feel physical/mental pain. My reasoning for thinking the punishments/rewards described in the Quran may be metaphorical is the following verse:

''The similitude of the Garden which is promised for the upright, is flowing streams beneath, its fruit everlasting, and cool shades. This is the reward of the upright, while the reward of the rejecters is the Fire.''

He would stare into the fire and the flicker of light, the heat radiating his face, and the sharp crackle of wood snapping would always make him reflect on the vile invention of hell. How could any All Merciful being creating something this vile? It was such a terrifying prospect to be burned alive, for all eternity. When your skin has been burned off, a fresh coat of skin was to be regrown, for it all to happen again.

He mused on the comical prospect of dying from all the smoke but then remembered hell was described as smokeless fire, which made no sense. Burned to a crisp? Or burned to there are no cells left? Was one to be regrown from nothing? Cells out of no material? It was psychological surely, on a moral level and on a scientific level hell was nonsensical.

It was a form of coercion, fear put in place since a young age, to bid the will of an invisible being. A being nobody has spoken to, seen, heard, touched, smelled or felt. There is no physical proof of his existence. And the only mention of him came from a book dictated by the invisible being using yet another invisible being to a man that we are not fully sure existed or if he did, in the time and place that he supposedly was born in. It was absurd. It all had to be taken on faith, every single bit. Which would have been fine, if not for the terrible fear of eternal punishment for having doubt, or looking outside the religion you were born into.

It was a God that was happy with worship and obedience, even if it came in more pathetic and insincere forms. And the rewards? Heaven, filled with non-alcoholic wine, a grape juice for adults, sex, shade, and food. What a bizarre thing, at one hand you are punished eternally, and on the other hand, you eat, fuck and sleep eternally. How absurd. He was certain, if not for the punishment of hell, and the selfish rewards of eternal life and bliss most people would not believe in any of this foolishness, as he saw it, and instead focus on their lives and the betterment of other people’s lives. Fate would be taken into the hands of humans. Were it belonged.

I personally have experience burns to my face.  I rubbed my face immediately afterwards and to my horror watched as the skin peeled off and rolled up in my hands, the pain was unimaginable.

Oddly enough though, the idea of hell doesn't bother me, I have never been able to believe in it.

Its obvious that Islam's version of hellfire is hellfire on steroids. I mean its overkill. When my dad asked me about Islam, I told him. He kinda liked it back then and even felt a bit interested in it. I told him mostly all of the things about hellfire (from that list) and to this day he is disgusted at Islam. He told me that whoever wrote the Qur'an has no heart, is sadistic and cruel. I agree with him.

Also, another thing. If 999/1000 people will go to hellfire, and only 1/1000 are going to paradise, how is Allah more merciful. I asked him doesn't Allah say his mercy overtake his wrath, because it certainly doesn't. You know what he told me? He told me "I learned that its best not to ask too many questions."  Roll Eyes

Are these all in the Quran, or hadith too?

I think a combination of both, although the Quran is pretty clear itself:

Qur'an (40:71-72) - When the fetters and the chains shall be on their necks; they shall be dragged Into boiling water, then in the fire shall they be burned

Qur'an (22:19-21) - But as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them; boiling fluid will be poured down on their heads; Whereby that which is in their bellies, and their skins too, will be melted; And for them are hooked rods of iron

Qur'an (4:56) - Those who disbelieve Our revelations, We shall expose them to the Fire. As often as their skins are consumed We shall exchange them for fresh skins that they may taste the torment Lo! Allah is ever Mighty, Wise

Qur'an (56:92-94) - But if he is of the rejecters, the erring, then the welcome will be boiling water and roasting at hell-fire

There is plenty more.  The quran loves to talk about hell.  yes

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Talks about hellfire more than paradise, and even in hadith, it talks more about Allah's wrath and punishments for sins rather than his mercy and forgiveness.

    13:35

Why bother saying it then?  For some it might sound petty & vengeful.  For others it might be a strong cause for not believing?

I sent my Soul through the Invisible,
Some letter of that After-life to spell:
And by and by my Soul return'd to me,
And answer'd "I Myself am Heav'n and Hell:"

Heav'n but the Vision of fulfill'd Desire,
And Hell the Shadow from a Soul on fire,
Cast on the Darkness into which Ourselves,
So late emerged from, shall so soon expire.

    1. Bad according to which standard, the Quran?

    2. If you think that the punishment is metaphorical, what makes you feel scared?
