     OP - March 13, 2010, 03:55 AM

Does anyone here know anything about latency and computer stuttering issues?

Major latency problems resulting in regular stuttering and delays. Gaming causes eventual lockups. Its very regular. I used a program called DPC Latency checker and get regular sequences of off the chart dropouts:

Did you try the driver test it suggested?

Yeah. No luck. I turned off various devices and the issue still remains.  Cry

Hmm... well, if it is a driver issue, this could help: http://www.devicedoctor.com/ I use it all the time at work.

It looks like you are using Vista, correct? How long has this been happening, and do you see any other performance problems other than your connection?

Its been happening maybe 1-2 weeks now. No other problems aside from the system just stuttering and pausing quite regularly. The hiccups coincide with those DPC latency peaks.

I'll give device doctor a shot.

You didn't say if it is Vista. From your screen shot it looked like it, but I could be wrong. If it is, then you might try turning off indexing. When I was running Vista it basically killed my performance, and disabling indexing helped a bit but it still sucked. The only thing that fixed it was upgrading to Win7 Afro

Sorry, yeah it's vista 32 bit.

How do I turn of indexing?

Hmm.. i should consider WIN 7...

Oh, I guess I should mention Vista ran fine for about 1.5 - 2 years, and then it got shitty really fast.

Wow, Device Doctor came up with like 15 updates i need to apply to various drivers. I checked over all my drivers in device manager and it never told me to do that. But here goes nothing.

Um.. it's been awhile since I played around with Vista. I think you can get to your services by typing "services" in the start menu search box (where the "run" command used to be in XP).

From there you should find something like Windows Search or Search Index or something like that. Right click and go to the properties and stop the service. You should also find an option somewhere to not automatically start the service.

You can also explicitly disable indexing for each drive. From My Computer, right click a drive and choose properties, and you should see an option for indexing that drive. Just turn it off.

    That should do the trick.

And yes, Windows 7 is so much better than Vista. I liked Vista when I had it, until it started giving me problems, and now that I use Win7 there is just no comparison.

Btw, I ran my comp on safe mode and noticed there was no stuttering.. a disabled driver must have solved the issue or something...

Hmm, that's hard to say. Safe mode disables a lot of stuff. It basically gives you the bare minimum needed to run Windows, but it's very possible one of the devices was the culprit.

This is what you do u lamer:

    1. ctrl + alt + del
    2. start task manager
    3. open processes tab (pls provide us with a screenshot)
    4. check which process is taking up resources (pls tell us which one is causing trouble)
    5. kill it with right click + end process

    6. click on start
    7. type msconfig into search
    8. check startup tab (screenshot pls) and disable the problematic startup item; if the troublemaker is not listed goto 4
    9. click on services tab - find and disable the problematic process
    10. delete all porn on F:
    11. download: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php ; check cpu and gpu temperatures (pls tell us what they are); "gaming causes lockups" - its possible that either the cpu or gpu are throttling because they are overheating
    12. are you perchance using an SSD?

No not really. I'm currently doing a system restore, I'll follow you steps if the problem still occurs.

    ROFL

My computer is now officially FUCKED. Locks up within 5 minutes of logging into windows.

Probably going to have to format.

Naw, I'm on my laptop. My $4000 system is now officially un-usable.  dance  Cry

Steps I'm going to take next:

    - Clean out the inside of my computer case. I have like 2 3D cards so maybe dust and overheating are issues?
    - Check all my internal connections and take out my cards, clean out the pins and put em back in
    - Back up my shit
    - Format the computer and start from scratch.

Well, formatting will certainly do the trick. Unless it's a hardware problem. You might want to run some diagnostics as well.

Also, "Back up my shit" should be number 1 on the list lol.

I build my own PCs and I spent a couple of grand on this big boy. I love custom built stuff, I have 2 GTX280s graphics cards purring in this byaach. Can you do that with a Mac? LOL Actually.. can you even play games on a mac??? ROFL

Also, "Back up my shit" should be number 1 on the list lol.

I've backed up some critical stuff, my official docs and what not. But other stuff like all the gazzillion games I've installed, are going to have to go obviously.  Cry

Interesting fact: I discovered that I have close to 20gb worth of pornography. Cheesy  handjob

have you checked the CPU/GPU temps with http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php?
do you have an SSD in your PC?

btw I tought you are a brownie; you look whiter than me you self-hating Canadian
  • Re: Computer stuttering + DPC Latency
     Reply #29 - March 14, 2010, 11:23 PM

SSD? Like as in a flash drive of some sort? Nope.

I'll check the CPU temps, doubt its the issue, the CPU usage is normal. I also opened up my comp during the spikes just to see if its hotter than normal with fans running faster. No issue there either. I'm pretty sure its a device driver fuck up or something, because the hiccups happen on active programs and doesn't  happen in safe mode. That means the mouse cursor, for example, is always active and normally responsive. I dunno. fucking confusing problem.

And trust me, I'm brown. lol
