I wish I knew arabic.  For a start, Muslims wouldn't be able to use the "you don't know arabic!" excuse when I refute the Quran.

Actually, some of them will still use that excuse, except they'll say... "Oh but you don't know classical Quranic arabic!"

I bet most of them don't know classical Arabic themselves - it's become a knee-jerk response.

My spoken Arabic is not perfect, but I know classical Arabic better than many Arabs! And I'm not being big headed - it's the truth - I studied it and have a 1st class degree in Arabic - tafseer being my specialist subject - and also studied to Phd level and translated 1/4 of Zamakhsharis tafseer which is all balagha and grammar - and still I get that accusation from ppl who know shit themselves!

Hass - Would you say Pickthal is the most accurate Quranic translator out there, or are there any better than him?

I did it back in the early 80s and never got round to finishing it - got a bit bored by it. I actually left all my manuscripts with Sheikh Ahmad in his office at Islamia - I wanted to forget all that stuff at the time.

Horses for courses - I personally always liked Yusuf Ali - probably because he was more poetic and softened things - but yes I agree that Pickthall is more accurate.

Those two are still the best imho.

SOAS is "The School of Oriental & African Studies" - part of the University of London.

Abdul Haleem is a nice chap - typical Egyptian - If I'm honest I don't think that highly of him as a scholar - I haven't spoken to him for years.

I had 3 Tutors over the 5 years I was at SOAS (4 for my BA and 1 for my Phd which I never completed.) = John Wansbrough, the guy who wrote "Quranic Studies", David Cowan the Scottish convert who wrote a grammar on Arabic, and Abdul Haleem.

    My native language is Italian

I know English but I am not very fluent in it yet. But since I love it, I try to practice whenever I can (English books, original language tv shows, etcetera)

I can understand Lombard, but I don't speak it much, since it's a dying language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Lombard)

I used to know very basic Dutch (enough to survive in the Netherlands like... reading simple instructions or asking basic indications), but I don't remember it much anymore

Do not look directly at the operational end of the device.

Kaffir Latte and Zebedee, I need to speak to both of you about living in Glasgow. I've been offered places at Glasgow and Cardiff medical schools and I haven't the slightest idea which one to choose. So far I'm inclined to pick Glasgow as it's better academically.

Do you mind if I PM'ed you guys?

English, Urdu/Hindi, a little bit of French, and some choice words and phrases in Russian.

    Russian swearing lessons, please.  Cheesy

I was going to learn Serbian at one stage and they have some great curses. I can't remember how to say it but one of them translated as "May your mother recognise you in a hamburger."

Oh and I only speak English, Australian, a few words of several other languages, and some choice phrases in lolcat.
